Things you love about Star Trek

Which brings up a side point (for me at least): one of the almost fatal flaws of the TOS movies was that we went from the hotness of Kirstie Alley to the Dollar General Store Manager appearance of Robin Curtis to the cold cuteness of Kim Catrall.
As I recall they lobbied pretty hard to get Kirstie Alley back as Saavik for that flick, and she would have been the traitor. That would have worked better than Cattrall/Valeris, imho.

I won't have this Kim Cattrall erasure go unanswered godDAMNIT

Robin Curtis' 80's hair is probably the single element that dates the TOS movies to that era the hardest

I like the TOS aesthetic. I like that they thought about the functionality of the tools and equipment, even if it's something we see on screen one time. Yes the other shows did this, the work the Okuda's did was good as well, but in TOS it truly looks like a progression from NASA era to a future NASA. ENT also looks like a natural mid point between NASA and TOS. I don't care that TOS has cardboard sets or it looks "outdated", I still like it.

SNW gets some of of the TOS aesthetic right, but it's almost as if they're scared to go full on. They do a good job of mostly making it look good, but their writing is uneven. When you have only 10 episodes, every episode needs to be pretty good and not gimmicky.

What about Disco Bones?

I like how DS9 paid tribute to the TOS aesthetic in "Trials & Tribble-ations" by having Dax be nostalgic for the old designs as she used a TOS tricorder.

Good point, but we only get a minute of 70's Leisure Suit McCoy whereas 80's Bouffant Saavik is all over TSFS.

I love all the work the Okudas put into the technical design. Apparently they added labels to all of the buttons and controls of the TOS Defiant for In A Mirror Darkly but they're so subtle you still can't see 99% of them in even in HD. There's still a lot of solid art design spread out across modern Trek, but the consistency obviously has gone out the window so there's a lot of messy stuff mixed in there. Hell over the past few years I've seen some really nice ships for Star Trek Online even though it's not my kind of game.

So, at the old "Star Trek Experience"...ride? experience?... in Vegas, while they're hustling us all from the transporter room to the bridge, I slowed down long enough to read some of the signage in the corridors. They were designed to be atmosphere, not actually read, and they said things like "You don't jump on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind." I can't even remember where they were? Next to doors? I forget, but I explicitly remember the Jim Croce lyric. And IIRC, after I looked at a few, one of the cast members gave me a sort of wink before hurrying me along.
