Will Ferrell

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
Kind of plays the same character in each movie, dunnee?

Yep. This thread could also have been titled "Adam Sandler".

Or "Jim Carrey", "Ben Stiller", "Rapeman69", etc.

They were great on SNL, and some of their earlier movies were good.. but I agree they do the same characters over and over.

I begrudgingly like Will Ferrell. Mainly because one of my guilty pleasures is the movie Night at the Roxbury.

Seen it. It was pretty decent!

Ben Stiller's one shining moment where he played someone other than himself was Zoolander.

Ferrell was goofy-funny in that movie without the usual uncomfortable, overbearing traits that bleed through most of his characters.

Zoolander is a cult classic.

Let's face it. All actors have some sort of "type". This is the reason they're cast for most of the roles they play.

A lot of A-listers are like that. Robert DeNiro, Nick Cage, Brad Pitt, George Clooney... the list goes on. I mean, hell, take anyone from any romantic comedy you've ever seen and look at their imdb list. For most of them, their entire career is spent playing those types of roles.

Good actors break away from the pack. Comedy actors, however, don't move far away from what works for them. As any thespian will tell you, comedy is harder than real life. From a comedian's standpoint, it's their bread and butter.

What it boils down to is whether you like the role they consistently play.

I like Will Ferrell because he writes funny parts for himself. Roxbury, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers were all written by Will.

Orignal roles they've played.

Sarsgaard - His IMDB profile looks like a Cannes who's who.

Cole - He went from Lumbergh in Office Space to the announcer Cotton on Dodgeball then on to play Ricky Bobby's dad in Talladega Nights. I'd say his career is wide and varied. Especially since he doesn't repeat a role in any of those three comedies.

Cooper - Adaptation (John Laroche)

Morse - Ok, this one you're right about.

Martin - He stepped away from the cowboy role to play an accountant in Slap Shot.

Dear Lord Baby Jesus, lying there in your, your little ghost manger, lookin' at your Baby Einstein developmental...videos, learnin' 'bout shapes and colors

No, that's what I'm saying, those guys never play the same character twice.

David Morse never plays anything other than his cardboard-stiff authoritarian type.

Will Ferrell is as funny as cancer, but less dramatic.

Johnny Depp always seems to play really watchable characters in critically acclaimed movies. What a bastard!

Gary Cole reached his zenith as the voice of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law.

Stephen Colbert as Reducto & Phil Ken Sebben.

John Michael Higgins as Mentok.

Peter MacNichol as X the Eliminator.

Throw in Michael McKean and Lewis Black every few episodes.

It's a wonder they got as many eps made as they did before everyone started wanting money. :)
