What is Sacramento like?

If you were to move to California and had to choose a city which would you choose? Also can anyone tell me about Sacramento?
 
There is no way in Hell I would move to California. I've driven through Sacramento at least once. That's about all I know about it.

Actually Carlsbad, a little town between Camp Pendleton and San Diego that has Legoland, was nice back at the turn of the century. Don't know what it's like these days. The Irish pub we liked to go to is gone. I mean, last time I was down there it was still an Irish pub, but it was more "Paddy McGilliwack's"; some horrible contrived place than the one that was named after the owner's father from Boston and the owner would play live music Friday nights with some of his buddies.
 
Okay, so. California is a lovely place to visit but no way in hell would I live there again. I did for awhile back in the 80s and things have just gotten stupider since then. It was already pretty stupid.

I know not much of Sacramento aside of having driven through it a few times. Most if not all large cities in CA are complete traffic nightmare shitholes, and that's not even counting the people. I briefly considered buying a place in the Emerald Triangle north of San Francisco, not a beach town but close enough to the ocean to make it maybe a half hour drive. Real estate was actually cheap when I was looking. Not so much anymore. But the people were cool, probably because they were to baked to be offensive.

As somebody who does not drive, I could not live in a place without a robust public transit system (we have a great one here).

I don't plan on moving. People will have to scrape me off these mountains. I saw a job based in Sacramento and gave it 2 thoughts for a couple of seconds.
 
There are parts of Cali that are cool and spectacular, but a lot of negatives to trying to live there. Of course I say that with a frame of reference from forty years ago. And my life situation was far from normal.
 
The thing that stands out to me about California is any time I buy anything online. Literally ANYTHING. Paint. (California warning: USC123456) OK. I get it. Paint fumes. Batteries. (California warning: USC654321) Fair enough. Lead. Acid. Tennis rackets. (USC43928747) Wait, what? How can a tennis racket be hazardous? "Well, someone could bust it open, unthread it and accidentally hang themself." Fuck you, California. Give me my rounded kindergarten Nerf scissors to protect me from my own stupidity.
 
Errr, California is a big ass state. We have mountains, beaches and the “central valley” (which I consider Sacramento to be a part of). I’m familiar with the entire state although less so the northern most parts (with their giant redwoods and very small, rural towns). From someone who’s lived here forever “big cities” pretty much stop north of SF and Sacramento. Everything north of there is wilderness to most of us. But yeah, I’d never want to live in Sacramento. Hot (really hot), dry, too far away from the ocean. It’s closer to Lake Tahoe but still not (by any stretch) one of the nicer places to live in California.
