Seahawks Win Three Medals On First Day of CAA Meet


Courtney Lines successfully defending her crown in the women's long jump with a winning leap of 6.18m (20-3.5). She beat out Northeastern's Dominique Biron (6.04m) and Hampton's Maya Hanks (5.96m). Sophomore Ryan DeBarber placed third in the Men's Javelin with a throw of 62.87m and freshman Jesse Helton took third in the Men's Discus with a mark of 49.15m.

Two-time defending women's champion Elon sits atop the women's standings with 57 points, while William & Mary is close behind with 50 points. Northeastern is third with 36 points, followed by Delaware (26.5), UNCW (16.5), Hampton (11), Towson (10), Charleston (10), Monmouth (9), Hofstra (6) and Stony Brook (2).

Monmouth, making its first CAA Championship debut, leads the men's competition with 88 points, while seven-time defending champion Northeastern stands second with 61.5 points. North Carolina A&T is third with 32 points, followed by William & Mary (30.5), Hampton (26), UNCW (19), Stony Brook (10) and Hofstra (6).

Parks Medals Twice In CAA Meet Finale


UNCW workhorse Josh Parks reached the podium twice, defending his title in the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles and claiming silver in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles, as the curtain closed on the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships on Saturday at William & Mary's Walter J. Zable Stadium.

Gamache only second softball Seahawk to win CAA Player of the year


For only the second time in school history, a Seahawk has won the CAA softball award for the Player of the Year. UNCW two-way star Janel Gamache has captured Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year honors following one of the most well-rounded efforts at the plate and in the circle in school history. Gamache, a graduate student, becomes the second Seahawk to win the league’s Player of the Year award with UNCW Hall of Famer Carley Hughes in 2007. It also marks the first time the Seahawks have had three representatives on the CAA’s top team and the second straight year the program has collected four All-Conference honors.

CAA Recognizes DuBois, Six Seahawks


UNCW's Mait DuBois has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for the ninth time and six Seahawks have been recognized on the league's All-Conference team. The Seahawks recently finished the season with a 17-8 record and went a perfect 6-0 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents. UNCW swept through the CAA Tournament in easy fashion before falling to No. 11 Duke, 4-2, in the NCAA Regionals in Durham, N.C.

Seahawks Add Youngstown State Transfer


Heady guard Shemar Rathan-Mayes of Youngstown State will join the UNCW men's basketball team for the 2023-24 season, fourth-year Seahawk head coach Takayo Siddle has announced. The 5-11, 180-pound Rathan-Mayes has two years of eligibility remaining after starting 67 games at YSU over the last three seasons. He played a key role as the Penguins went 24-10 and captured the Horizon League regular season championship in 2022-23. YSU fell to Oklahoma State, 69-64, in the National Invitation Tournament.

The Toronto, Canada, native averaged 7.4 points per game during his time with the Penguins, shooting 34.7 percent from three-point range. Rathan-Mayes scored 576 points, grabbed 152 rebounds and dished out 168 assists in his three years at YSU. He made the Horizon League's All-Freshman team in 2020-21 after collecting 10.4 ppg.

Seahawks Announce Extension For Siddle


Successful UNCW men's basketball head coach Takayo Siddle has agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep the third-year head coach in the Port City at least through the 2027-28 season. Siddle has steered the Seahawks to a 58-29 overall record over the last three years. UNCW has compiled a 33-16 record in Colonial Athletic Association games, advancing to the CAA Tournament championship tilt in each of the last two years.

In 2022-23, UNCW, predicted to finish fifth in the league's preseason poll, sailed to a 24-10 record and finished tied for third place in the CAA. The Seahawks cranked out a school-record 13-game winning streak and won the championship of the Baha Mar Invitational in Nassau, The Bahamas, with four wins in four days. Siddle's club then knocked off Drexel in the CAA quarterfinals and upset regular season champion Hofstra in the semifinals before falling to Charleston in the title game.

UNCW Wins CAA Regular Season Baseball Title With Sweep


Needing to win both ends of a doubleheader to earn the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship, UNCW rolled past William & Mary, 6-0 and 6-3, on Saturday at Brooks Field. The Seahawks (31-21, 20-8) claimed their 10th CAA regular season title with the sweep and enter next week's conference championship tournament as the top seed. The Tribe, which also clinched a tournament berth this weekend, saw their record move to 32-23 and 15-15. Conner Kane (4-1), a freshman, picked up the win in the clincher, allowing four hits and no runs over a career-long 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out five in his first start in conference play.

Diamondhawks Win Seventh CAA Championship


UNCW held off a furious late-game rally by Northeastern to claim its seventh Colonial Athletic Association title with a 5-4 win on Sunday at Patriot Point. The Seahawks enter the NCAA Regionals with a 34-21 mark while the Huskies dipped to 44-14. The seventh title ties the conference record set by East Carolina. UNCW belted three home runs on the night in jumping out to an early lead. Dillon Lifrieri, who was named tournament Most Outstanding Player, and Tanner Thach slammed back-to-back homers in the first and Jac Croom added his seventh roundtripper of the season in the sixth. Croom finished with three hits, while Alec DeMartino and Lifrieri chipped in two hits apiece.

UNCW head volleyball coach Dottie Hamton has announced the additions of Carol Grubba de Oliviera, A'siya Magazine, Charlotte Cronister and Maris Grant to play for the Seahawks in the 2023-24 season.

Isley Tabbed All-Region


UNCW junior Walker Isley has been named Ping All-Region following another tremendous season for the Seahawks, which included a trip to the NCAA Regionals. Isley led the Seahawks with a career-best 71.06 stroke average while posting six top-10 finishes this season. He posted a tournament victory at the J.T. Poston Invitational in late September. Isley was also an All-CAA first-team honoree and finished third in the CAA Championship tournament. His 71.06 stroke average ranks third best all-time at UNCW. The last Seahawks to earn this award was Blake McShea in 2021.

CAA Recognizes 271 Seahawk Student-Athletes


The Colonial Athletic Association's Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for the Spring, 2023, semester features 271 student-athletes from UNCW. A total of 3,519 student-athletes in the CAA were recognized early Monday by conference officials. Six different UNCW teams placed at least 20 student-athletes on the list, while 11 programs reached double-digits in honorees. Recipients must participate in a CAA-sponsored sport, attain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 during the designated academic term and be enrolled as a full-time student.

CAA renamed Coastal Athletic Conference amid new membership​

The Colonial Athletic Conference has been renamed the Coastal Athletic Conference, the league announced Thursday. Known as the CAA, the league has retained that familiar moniker and will keep the same logo. The league has expanded out of its initial Northeast and Mid-Atlantic footprint in recent years amid conference realignment, and sources said the name change was put in place to reflect both the expansion and modernization of the league. "The Conference's new name represents a culmination of its efforts over the past three years to expand its membership, solidify its geographic footprint and affirm its long-standing mission through a new vision statement which emphasizes that CAA institutions work together to advance nationally competitive college athletic programs -- coupled with outstanding academic programs -- that empower student athletes as whole persons who strive at the highest level in every aspect of their lives," CAA commissioner Joe D'Antonio said in a statement. "Our new name is reflective of the Conference's continuity and unity, as well as each institutions' commitment to be United in Excellence." Seahawks Introduce Comprehensive NIL Platform


UNCW Athletics has announced the launch of FLIGHT, an all-in-one platform for Seahawk student-athletes to connect with fans, brands, donors and others interested in using their Name, Image or Likeness. FLIGHT provides various ways to interact with Seahawk student-athletes, including a partnership with INFLCR, one of the industry's leading providers in athletics endorsements and branding. FLIGHT also provides educational opportunities for our student-athletes which will include financial literacy and personal branding in the future. We are excited to utilize our campus resources as we begin this next step. To show the commitment UNCW has to NIL, the department recently promoted Laura Pearson to Assistant AD for Administration. Pearson will be working closely with Seahawk student-athletes to provide NIL education and support. Pearson's role is the first in the conference specifically dedicated to NIL. "In regard to our student-athletes, anything we do, we must provide a first-class experience," said Michael Oblinger, UNCW's Director of Athletics. "We have made several investments in our student-athlete support services. FLIGHT is another example of our continued investment in the student-athlete experience. For us to remain competitive in the ever-changing collegiate landscape, we must embrace NIL. UNCW Basketball Season Tickets On Sale

Season tickets for the upcoming 2023-24 UNCW men's and women's basketball seasons are now available to the general public. The schedules will feature nine home games against Coastal Athletic Association opponents in addition to matchups against non-conference foes. Tickets for men's basketball start at $99 and only upper level seats remain at this time. Certain sections require a seat donation payable to the Seahawk Club. Women's basketball tickets are $75 for general admission seating.

Seahawks Receive CAA Opponents for 2023-24

With the new hoops season less than three months out, the UNCW men's basketball team now knows where its Coastal Athletic Association games will be contested in 2023-24. The CAA unveiled its men's basketball opponents and locations for the new season early Tuesday. Dates and times will be announced later. Fourth-year Head Coach Takayo Siddle's club will embark on an 18-game conference schedule against league foes that features five repeat opponents, four home-only opponents and four away-only opponents. Following completion of the regular campaign, the league's teams will convene at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, DC, for the 2024 CAA Men's Basketball Championship.

CAA Women Announces 2023-24 Conference Opponents

The Coastal Athletic Association has unveiled the UNCW women's basketball conference opponents for the 2023-24 season. The Seahawks will play an 18-game conference schedule, featuring nine home and nine away contests, against all 13 league foes. Home-and-away opponents on the docket include Campbell, Charleston, Delaware, Drexel and Hampton. Conference games will primarily occur on a Friday/Sunday schedule. All CAA contests will be available nationally on FloHoops with some matchups on various regional sports networks on the East Coast.

Coaches Tab Seahawks Third in Preseason Poll


UNCW's Pep Casas headlines three Seahawks who have garnered Preseason All-Coastal Athletic Association Men's Soccer accolades as voted on by the league's 11 head coaches. Casas, a midfielder from Barcelona, Spain, appears on the Preseason All-CAA Team while midfielder Colton Pleasants and defender Jake Shannon earned Honorable Mention distinctions. UNCW was projected to finish in third place, behind two-time defending league champion Hofstra and Elon, in the CAA Preseason Poll. The Seahawks received one first-place vote. Casas enters his second season in the Port City after starting 15-of-17 games in 2022. The 5-10 senior attempted nine shots and logged an assist while playing 1,211 minutes for UNCW. Pleasants, a 2020-21 All-CAA First Teamer, has appeared in 31 contests (26 starts) since joining the Seahawks in 2019. The Raleigh, N.C., native has tallied four career goals and collected an assist. The 5-8 Pleasants was a CAA All-Rookie performer when he helped the Seahawks to their fifth regular season title in 2019.

Fall Baseball Schedule Announced


UNCW will play three exhibition games this fall, including a road game at Duke in mid-October. The Seahawks, who captured their seventh Colonial Athletic Association tournament title last spring and competed in their 11th NCAA regional, open the brief slate on Oct. 7 against Brunswick CC at Brooks Field. The Ontario Blue Jays visit Brooks Field on Oct. 15. The Blue Jays, who are based in Mississauga, are one of the top amateur programs in Canada and have sent multitudes of players onto college programs and professional leagues. Eight alums have reached the major leagues. The Seahawks open the fall practice portion of their year on Sept. 15 and wrap it up with the final game of the Blue/Teal Series on Oct. 29. The series will be a three-game set beginning on Oct. 26.
