Ex-Gardner Webb PG Siddle repeats Rupp Arena upset as UNCW coach​

UNC Wilmington coach Takayo Siddle steered his team to an 80-73 upset of No. 12 Kentucy on Saturday, a very familiar feeling for him. Sixteen years ago, Siddle scored eight points as a guard at Gardner Webb when his team upset Kentucky in Rupp Arena during the 2007-08 season. Siddle and Gardner Webb's victory over Kentucky was the school's first over a ranked team. UNC Wilmington's road win over Kentucky secured its first over a ranked team.

Casas Earns United Soccer Coaches All-Region Honors​

UNCW men's soccer midfielder Pep Casas has earned United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-Atlantic Region Second Team honors announced Tuesday. Casas was previously named to the All-Coastal Athletic Association Second Team in early November. The Barcelona, Spain, native scored two goals and contributed an assist across 16 games, including 15 starts, in 2023. The 5-10 senior scored his first goal of the season and added an assist in the Seahawks' 4-0 home route over rival Campbell in late September then followed it up with a penalty kick score at Stony Brook one week later. The Indiana Tech transfer has been a mainstay in the Seahawk midfield over the previous two seasons, appearing in every possible game (33) while making 30 starts. UNCW has had a USC All-Region performer in three of the previous four seasons.

Women's Tennis Releases 2024 Schedule​

UNCW Women's Tennis will open its 2024 season on Feb. 1 against visiting Mount Olive in the first of nine home matches on the schedule, released on Friday by UNCW Head Coach Hans Olsen. The Seahawks, who are one year removed from an incredible run to the finals of the Coastal Athletic Association Championships, will play seven matches against conference members. The highlight of those matches will be a home date with reigning conference champion William & Mary on Mar. 14. Two other programs the Seahawks knocked off during their run are on the schedule (Charleston (Mar. 23 Away) and Drexel (Mar. 29 home). In non-conference action, the Seahawks host Presbyterian, UNCG, St. John's and Coastal Carolina, among others.

White Named National Player of the Week​

UNCW junior forward Trazarien White was one of five collegiate basketball players to be named Oscar Roberton National Players of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday following an impressive win for the Seahawks at Kentucky. White, who averaged a double-double over the course of two games, was joined by Boo Buie (Northwestern), Boogie Ellis (Southern Cal), Baylor Scheierman (Creighton), and Shahada Wells (McNeese). For the week, White averaged 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 52% (13-for-25) from the field.

UNCW To Host 2024 CAA Championship Tournament​

UNCW softball Head Coach Ashley Wade has announced a 52-game schedule for the 2024 season that features 13 games against seven opponents from last season's NCAA Tournament. The Seahawks, who achieved a program-record 17 Coastal Athletic Association wins en route to a second-place finish in the conference, will play 28 home games at Boseman Field, 19 road contests and five neutral site games away from the Port City.

Boseman Field will serve as the site of the 2024 CAA Softball Championships from May 8-11. It will mark the first time the league's postseason tournament will be held in Wilmington. UNCW will play 27 CAA games against nine league foes including hosting defending CAA Champion Hofstra from Mar. 29-31. Other NCAA teams from 2023 include George Mason (H – Mar. 22), UMBC (H – Mar. 25), Minnesota (N – Mar. 2-3), Charlotte (A – Mar. 3), Duke (A – Mar. 20) and new league member Campbell (H – Apr. 19-21).

The 25-game non-conference slate includes home contests vs. Michigan State (Feb. 28), Coastal Carolina (Mar. 6) and East Carolina (Apr. 17) as well as an away doubleheader against the Blue Devils and a single contest at North Carolina (Apr. 3). UNCW will also play in two road tournaments starting in Jacksonville from Feb. 16-18. The Seahawks will battle North Florida, Jacksonville, Mercer and Samford throughout the weekend.

Men's Soccer Announces Olivia Knighton Scholarship​

The UNCW men's soccer team and the Olivia Knighton Foundation have announced the creation of the Oliiva Knighton Endowed Scholarship to honor the late daughter of iconic UNCW goalkeeper Brad Knighton '19 and his wife Britney Eldridge-Knighton '07. The Knighton Scholarship will serve to honor the life and memory of Olivia Grace Knighton, who was tragically killed at age 11 in a boating accident on July 19, 2023. The scholarship will annually be awarded to a deserving UNCW men's soccer player in hopes that Olivia's passion and ability to be a beautiful light will continue. The scholarship is the latest Seahawk tribute to Olivia following Olivia's Game held at the UNCW Soccer Stadium in early September. Nearly 1,200 fans, including the Knighton family, attended to pay their respects to Brad and Britney's late daughter. The game included a highly successful teal t-shirt drive, wristband giveaway, and a moment of silence. Brad made a special appearance on the game's FloFC broadcast.

Stoughton Joins Women's Soccer Staff​

UNCW women's soccer Head Coach Chris Neal has named Auburn graduate assistant Savannah Stoughton an assistant coach ahead of the 2024 campaign. Stoughton spent the previous two seasons on staff at Auburn. She was also a four-year letterwinner at High Point from 2015-18. A team captain, she helped the Panthers to the 2017 Big South Championship and subsequent NCAA berth. While at Auburn, Stoughton helped facilitate goalkeeper training, opponent scouting, practice planning and contributed to game strategy meetings. She also oversaw the Tigers' student manager staff and interned in Auburn's equipment room. Stoughton was a forward at High Point, where she appeared in 59 games and made seven starts in her four-year career. She totaled four assists and collected 23 shots with the Panthers. Following graduation, she enjoyed a stint with Bergerac Perigord FC, a women's professional league in France.

Women's Soccer Signs Kansas State Transfer​

The UNCW women's soccer team has added goalkeeper Morgan Hobbs to the program ahead of the 2024 campaign. Hobbs, a native of El Cajon, Calif., spent the previous two seasons at Kansas State. "We are excited to add Morgan to the team. She has two years of experience in the BIG 12 and that should help her transition into the CAA," said UNCW Head Coach Chris Neal. She has a great presence and is very comfortable with both feet in possession. She grew up in SoCal, so I think she will feel right at home here in the Hawk's Nest."

Hobbs will bolster a goalkeeping unit following the graduation of standout netminder Hanna Wise. A product of Santana High School, Hobbs was the starting goalkeeper for the Sultans as they qualified for the 2020-21 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Tournament qualifying squad. She recorded nine shutouts and registered a goals against average of less than one. The Wildcats transfer, Hobbs, played for the San Diego Surf in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL). She was named to the 2021 ECNL National Selection game. Hobbs made her NCAA debut last season when she played 30 minutes and recorded a save vs. Oral Roberts.

Isley, Levy Partake in Patriot All-America​

UNCW's Walker Isley and Victoria competed among the nation's top collegiate golfers last weekend at the 2023 Patriot All-America Invitational at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Isley made his second straight appearance at the tournament while Levy debuted at the event that honored military heroes. The three-round, 54-hole event was staged by the combined efforts of the Arizona Golf Association, the Golf Coaches Association of America and the West Valley Mavericks in conjunction with the tournament's beneficiary, the Folds of Honor Foundation. Isley and Levy, along with the 220 other golfers, had the opportunity to visit Luke Air Force Base, the training center for the nation's F-16 and F-35 fighter pilots. They met with Brigadier General Jason M. Rueschhoff, fighter pilots, and crew, and toured the base. Levy sponsored Staff Sergeant Donald C. May, Jr., a 31-year-old member of the United States Marine Corps, who was killed in action in March 2003. Isley, meanwhile, represented Police Officer Bryan J. Durman, who was killed in a hit-and-run in April 2010. Before joining the police force, Durman was a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force and served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
