I'm praying for this series to not shit the bed more than maybe any other series I've ever been hooked on.
 
I'm sure it won't shit the bed, though it's unrealistic not to expect any skid marks.

I thought the whispers were versions of themselves from other time zones trying not to bump into older younger versions of themselves, thus fucking up the timeline royally.

Well there's been nothing on the show to suggest that first one (yet). Remember at first the whispers were heard before the others appeared...of course the others seemed to have the ability to appear out of thin air at first...

They could be Jacob and his Enemy whispering to each other I SUPPOSE.
 
But there are multiple layers of whispers, it's not just a couple of people quietly walking behind a treeline. I like the idea of it being the sound of many alternate timelines seeping through.
