Rep. Tim Burchett Signals End of Effort, GOP Drops Biden Impeachment Crusade

A House Republican has acknowledged that it’s time to end the push for impeaching Joe Biden and shift focus. Representative Tim Burchett mentioned to NewsNation on Wednesday that he believes the House should vote on the matter to facilitate moving forward. “We’re not gonna have the votes … that’s clearly the case,” Burchett stated, a sentiment that marks a significant downshift in what had been an aggressive pursuit by some Republicans. Despite the party’s razor-thin majority in the House, GOP lawmakers, including Colorado Republican Ken Buck, have signaled that it is time to move on from what many view as a politically charged and baseless endeavor. Buck’s decision to retire from Congress was partly spurred by the chaos and pointlessness of the impeachment investigation.

In an emblematic committee hearing, which Burchett described as a “sham,” Republican efforts to link Joe Biden to alleged crimes fell short under scrutiny. Hunter Biden’s former business associate, Tony Bobulinski, and Jason Galanis, who is currently serving a prison sentence for financial fraud, failed to substantiate claims that the Biden family was embroiled in corruption. Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez challenged the supposed evidence, questioning the rationale behind continuing an inquiry founded on dubious allegations.

The fading impeachment crusade reflects not only the lack of substantial evidence but also a broader reluctance within the GOP to proceed with an effort unlikely to yield a constructive outcome. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has shifted his stance, now expressing contentment with making nonbinding criminal referrals to the Department of Justice, a far cry from the initial push for formal charges.

“At this point, the story is not the fact that the basis of this impeachment inquiry is wrong. The story is why it’s proceeding anyway. Why is this committee proceeding based on false charges?” Ocasio-Cortez said.
