TV Strange New Worlds season 4

4.6 - This was good! NOT because it was dramatic rather than "fun", but because it was well written, had great character work, and didn't feel completely weightless by the end.

Got to be the best Chapel-centric episode ever, though there haven't been many of them. I guess M'Benga "leaving" is to explain how Boyce ends up as CMO, then M'Benga comes back part-time for his TOS episodes (it almost a shame he was in TOS at all, because I might have bought that he'd die otherwise.) The M'Benga/Chapel relationship is one of the strongest the show has had.

Nice to see some more crewmembers and actually get the feeling that the ship has hundreds of people on it. Up to this point this season it's felt like the ship is run by like ten people.

The thing where the gravity got too strong was good, don't remember them doing that before.

The "och do you nae understand my accent!" bit was funny, SEE I LIKE FUNNY STUFF TOO.

I found the countdown clock appearing on screen a bit distracting but whatever.

What's with so many finger-loss scenes this season? Is it foreshadowing a villain made out of discarded fingers in the finale?
 
Goddamn, that might have just been the best episode of Star Trek ever, and I'm not kidding. Wow.

The lost fingers are still in single digits though.
 
Number One’s broken leg really freaked me out. I’d just seen two typically gory episodes of The Last of Us, but you don’t expect this in Trek.

It's the best episode of the season for sure.
 
This one is the worst of the series so far, maybe I would appreciate it more if I watched American soap operas.

Apparently there is an after credits scenes I missed, so look out for that.
 
I caught the first ten minutes of it and had to turn it off. I'll try the rest later after I've had a couple.

Tachyon Pulse on YT agreed it was beyond awful, but said the important part was the last third, so we'll see.

But yeah, it's pretty fucking retarded... especially when you compare it to last week's episode.

You should look up episodes of "As The Sperm Churns", or whatever that one was where Dr. Marlena Evans got possessed by the devil.

4.7 - What I ask myself with the gimmick episode is "was the episode made better by the gimmick?" And this time the answer was...maybe? The meat of the story was Pike dealing with his feelings for his imagined daughter (who I forgot was a thing, to be honest.) And that was all played straight and actually done well. But then something like the M'Benga/Ortega scene would probably have been better in a straight episode without the soap filter over it. On the other hand, I actually probably found it funnier than the previous comedy episodes this season. I laughed at the reveal of Ethan Peck as Sybok, Uhura telling Pike she's his daughter, and every time someone said "space madness." So I don't think it was a failure or a total waste, but it did end up feeling a bit short and I wish they could have gone really dramatic with the other storylines if they were going to do the soap thing. Imagine Avery Brooks doing the soap acting instead, he would have fucking eaten the set.

Man, I really think La'an's story this season has been terrible and I'm sorry to say that Christina Chong's acting has felt a little "off" too. She was my favourite character in the early seasons and I feel the writers have let her down.

Trelane didn't actually get much to do. All the scenes with him sitting in the chair with the Q lady felt like a bit of a waste.

I went back to watch the post credit scene when I found out I missed it and...it's completely pointless it doesn't matter if you miss it.

What a mother fucking abortion that was.

Pike's breakdown at the very end was the only thing that felt genuine to me. Yes, the unreal can affect the real. I've seen it.

I generally like SNW, but I've got some hard thinking to do about whether or not I'll finish out this season and watch the half-season that will wrap things up.

If I do, it will be because I don't like being out of the loop.
 
La'an and Sybok should have had an affair in true soap opera style.

I thought the episode got much better after the soap part was over. The end was pretty good, even if I didn't remember Pike's daughter.
 
They should have had some reminder of her earlier in the season to SEED it.
 
Even the “previously on...” didn’t jog my memory, so it took me a while to understand who she was. At first I thought they were saying he had a daughter before the series.

But in any case, I just found this episode really dull. Yes, the last scene was good, but the rest just felt like a waste of time to me. Another week where nobody goes to a Strange New World.
 
I would have broken my NuTrek moratorium had The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden (the indomitable VICTOR NEWMAN) been involved in the Soap Opera episode.

A standard rebuttal from the handful of people still running defense for SNW is to cite the gimmicks / homages found in other Trek series. No doubt - but they were the exception, not the rule. The key difference appears to be that SNW has no baseline.

Braeden was great in Colossus: The Forbin Project.

I feel almost bad shitting on SNW since it's at least not doing grimdark "we must commit war crimes for the greater good" shit like Discovery or... whatever Picard was. It feels like ass when the "good" modern Trek stuff still comes off like a parody of itself. Do the people making Star Trek want to make a sci fi show or do they just want to keep throwing shit at the wall in the vague hope that some of it sticks?
