Strange New Worlds season 3

I alternated between hating and loving this episode from scene to scene. Sometimes from line to line.

As already covered, the idea that people magically become logical (and rude) by having Vulcan dna completely misunderstands the concept of the species, and undermines Spock’s struggle. Which is especially confusing since so many lines in the episode do actually acknowledge all these things. It’s a very muddled story.

Meanwhile, I thought the Spock/La’an fight/dance scene was absolutely beautiful. Nice to casually see cetacean ops as well.

I wish Chapel had actually explained how her experience of being Vulcan helped her understand Spock more. Of course we can make our own assumptions, but to me it was a real missed opportunity for us to understand him more, and have this episode actually contribute something to the canon rather than trampling all over it. Presumably all of the characters would’ve had new insight into why he is the way he is, but we’ll never know...

There shouldn't be whales in cetacean ops. Aren't they still extinct at this time? STIV hasn't happened yet.

T'Lyn in Lower Decks is a great Vulcan character. Gabrielle Ruiz does an amazing job of never showing any emotion at all when she speaks AND YET T'Lyn never comes across as rude or a jerk. She forms friendships with the main characters and it's completely believable that they'd like her and that she would get something out of the relationships too. And it's a comedy cartoon! I have my doubts that SNW could handle a character like that, which makes me sad since I enjoyed the first two seasons a lot and there's still a lot I like about the show.

They were kind of rude in Enterprise as well, I think, and I didn’t like that characterisation either. But at least in that case they usually had good reason to be annoyed with Archer and co’s way of doing things.

I’m still enjoying SNW on the whole, but it feels very much a product of its time. Gimmicks, memberberries and attempts to create meme content. I don’t think it’ll age as well as the likes of TNG, etc.

... I don’t think it’ll age as well as the likes of TNG...
Ouch. TNG has aged terribly. I mean, there are bad TOS episodes, but every fucking TNG episode... TOS cold open: The Enterprise has been sent to investigate why they've lost contact with a starbase. When they get there, they find out EVERYONE IS DEAD. TNG cold open: Data is having a birthday party for his cat.

So, if the writers were really on their game, Geordi could show up to the party late, and find EVERYONE IS DEAD.
