Star Trek (spoilers for film) review

Excellent, truelly magnificent.

Every character is serviced well, even the minor characters have more to do in this film than all the original films put together, and forget what you have seen of the enterprise in still images, or even the trailers, there are shots that are just jaw droppingly awesome.

The spoiler bits are coming, you have been warned in the title, and at this moment, read no further if you haven't seen the film or don't mind being spoiled.

They confirm it in the film, the timeline has been altered, and things will never be the same again.

Vulcan has been destroyed, Spock's mother dies, Pike still ends up in a wheelchair, but without the meep meep light, Old Spock is still alive at the end of the film, and for me the end of the film gives you the most biggest smile any old school trek fan could get, Nimoy gives the "space the final fronteir" speach, and then they cut to a fully orchestrated amazing version of the old theme tune, not Goldsmiths TMP score, not Horners Wrath of Khan music, Alexander Courage's score, and it never sounded better.

Right uniforms, right music, right everything, this IS star trek, may it live long and prosper.

Good to hear! With so many positive reviews my initial jadeness is thawing finally.

Let's hope this actually does put Trek back on the map.

Kurl Urban is so spot on as McCoy, if you turn your head you would swear it was Deforrest Kelly doing the voice.

Nurse Chapel is name checked, but you don't get a good look at her.

Which means they could cast SCARLETT JOHANSSON as her in the next movie!

Messy bastards.

I was going to see it no matter what anyway. This just makes me all the happier. whoot!

I just came back from seeing it, and yeah I'd say it was a very good film.

Firstly, the good. This FEELS like a film. Unlike, say, Insurrection this feels like Cinematic Star Trek, although I HATE to use the word, it does feel "epic", the scope and size of the planets and ships felt great, all rendered in very very good CGI (seriously it’s amazing, even the silly Enterprise looks alright sometimes!).

The characters were also great. Pike is as cool as Pike ever was (I LOVE CAPTAIN PIKE), Spock, Scotty, well everyone managed to walk the line of being the character without seeming like a bad imitation.

All the annoying ANGST ANGST ANGST Kirk stuff in the trailers was there, but it all made sense to the character and felt natural, and certainly wasn't as pronounced as the trailers made it feel.

The music was great (AND THAT'S MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION). I'm sure some people will moan that it wasn't the TOS theme all over the place, but there's good reason for that (the TOS theme is VERY dated, and really isn't the most versatile of themes).

And the most important bit: I had fun watching it. Star Trek is fun again, they quickly get rid of the "well here's why everything's different OKAY STOP THINKING ABOUT CANON AND HAVE FUN DAMNIT" stuff, and it works.

All in all, an enjoyable and fun film.

Now, the bad. It's not a perfect film (there's no such thing as a perfect film), and all these bad points are very minor BUT THEY DO EXIST:

There wasn't really much to the film, deep down. Now, I was expecting this, in fact I think pretty much everyone was expecting this. It's just what they had to do to kick-start the franchise in the public's eye. This film is very much style over substance, but the style is very very good and almost makes up for it.

Nero himself wasn’t that much of a villain. It helps if you’ve read Countdown, and we do go into some of the stuff covered in it, but he still seemed a bit two-dimensional.

There was a bit too much comic-relief in the film, personally. Now I don’t want to seem like a I WANT MY STAR TREK SERIOUS AHHHHH STOP BEING FUNNY because some of it, a lot of it, worked. But it seemed there was a lot of stuff in there that didn’t really need to be there except to get a laugh (see: Scotty’s little friend) and felt a bit useless . I’ll admit this was probably exacerbated by the people in my cinema who seemed to laugh at EVERY OTHER LINE like it was the funniest thing in the world, so maybe it will seem less pronounced the second time.

SPOILER BITS:
The Spock / Uhura thing just comes out of nowhere, and really doesn't go anywhere, and doesn't really serve and purpose but to confuse the audience. They could've gone into exactly what it means for Spock to have that sort of emotional connection with someone but they didn't.

The ending seemed a bit... underwhelming. It was just "THE BAD GUY'S SHIP EXPLODES AND EVERYONE'S HAPPY. I guess it's one of the problems of the lack of substance - you want things to resolve at the end, but there's really not too much to resolve.

BUT APART FROM THAT IT WAS GOOD. THANK YOU.

GOOD REVIEW

Yes, good review!

The fact that both Tomtrek and Whisky enjoyed the movie lets me know I'm basically certain to feel the same way. I needed some hardcore fans that I actually know and also know aren't idiots to tell me what I wanted to hear and it's happened. So I'm very happy about that.

All the annoying ANGST ANGST ANGST Kirk stuff in the trailers was there, but it all made sense to the character and felt natural, and certainly wasn't as pronounced as the trailers made it feel.

Potentially my biggest fear (well Kirk in general) has been allayed somewhat by that. I'm glad it's not as pronounced as in the trailer because I couldn't relate with the Kirk in the trailer at all.

Now my biggest problem is actually watching the bloody movie. It won't get to Syros for another few months I'd imagine and I'm lazy to go all the way to Athens to see it.

Fuck.

Fly to Wacky and SEE IT WITH HIM OMG

YES I'll go even in a CROWDED CITY if you come with me.

The action of the film was some of the best stuff I've seen in a long time. (lol, I never go to the movies anymore). I didn't mind the funny stuff at all, but I agree that there wasn't much meat to the story. Still it was really really fun to watch! If this movie is kicking off a couple more movies, then I understand they needed to get some backstory, and pump up the excitement for Trek in general.

I knew who the redshirt was as soon as he started talking, I thought that was a cool nod to TOS. Actually there were several very cool little things that I know were in honor of TOS, I won't say what they are cause part of the fun is seeing it happen and knowing what it is.

AWESOME. No other word for it. I saw it in San Diego with LG, who is definitely NOT a Trek fan, and she was blown away as well.

Spoilers all over, but one of my fave parts was the very end, when Jim Kirk walks onto the bridge and does this gesture and says, "Bones!" it totally reminded me of the way Shatner did it, without being cheesy.

I'd pay money to see it again. I agree with Rolling Stone, it's this year's Iron Man.

I enjoyed the film.

I love how Spock and Kirk grow to appreciate each others positions, almost reversing their own ideals to the point where
Kirk is ready to rescue the man who killed his dad because its logical, and Spock just wants to let him die, because he has it coming
.

So i'm downloading the screener copy...35% successful so far.

NO, I WILL NOT PAY!!!

William Shatner is one FAT FUCK! i'm just sayin'.;)

Ya know, Shatner was rockin' my world in the late 70's/early 80's...NO SHIT!!

Yes, he was my bitch of all things sex related!

ok??

I'm going to see it AGAIN today so I'll see how some things work on a second pass.

*tries to be calm - the theatre isnt open yet*
SEEING IT TODAY!!
whoot- PERFECT Mothers' Day pressie IMHO !!

zomg what a nerd.

I still really liked it the second time.

The humour especially worked better when I was with an audience that only laughed at things that were actually funny.

GOOD FILM YES.
