Star Trek Discovery

It's based quite heavily on Ralph McQuarrie's (designed most of the good stuff in Star Wars) concepts for the Enterprise made for Phase II, so they're showing what big fans they are by picking this design. So that's positive.

That said, it's still ugly and the CG is dreadful considering how good tv effects have become nowadays. I would've thought more would be spent on a show that's meant to be kind of a big deal. And everything I've seen so far looks cheesy and mismatching. Yes, the original show was brightly coloured, but it was done with some care. This looks gaudy and cheap.

Hopefully when we start seeing some live action material it'll start to come together.

Unfortunately it looks like they decided showing what big fans they were was more important thank picking a design that actually looked good.
 
To be honest, while the CG should be pristine, I prefer the older, cleaner Trek look to space as opposed to JJ's "try and figure out what's going on through all this flying debris, shaking cameras, faraway zooms and blinding lens flares".
 
Ralph McQuarrie has designed some of the best and most iconic starships out there, this is not one of them.

And if this is the level of FX we can expect, it suddenly becomes a lot clearer why they were shutting down the fan films.

Because they look piss poor by comparison.

Seriously, did they use a commodore Amiga?

Kadin: NO! *laughs* I was surprised Bryan didn’t say that, actually. I mean, we had three weeks to throw that together. We wanted to show fans…we’re super-excited by the score that this amazing composer, Fil Eisner, threw together as an audition and he did an incredible job. The concepts of the ship are totally what we’re going for and they’ll be honed up until, I think, the day we deliver.

Three weeks or three hours?

For three weeks I still would have expected better from a professional SFX team, its not like its the most complicated of ship designs.
 
Mmm. In three weeks my team at work would make something far better and more professional.

Oh well, their hearts are in the right place and they do have lots of time to make something better, so we'll see what happens. I hope they'll take some of the feedback about the shop on board though. Something can be utilitarian and still be halfway attractive.
 
Hopefully it will at least not be 1970s-leisure-suit-brown and look like the product of a proper Star Trek ship having been raped by a Star Destroyer.
 
I don't recall that they went with name stars for their better captains in previous series.

William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, these were guys who had supporting roles in good stuff prior to their stints on Star Trek. (Although I seem to recall that Stewart already had some serious stage chops.) Kate Mulgrew was the same (although godawful, inconsistent writing didn't do her any favors). Scott Bakula might be the only actor to play a Captain in a Star Trek series who had ever had top billing in anything before that (and he got the same godawful material work with that Mulgrew did.)
 
Now how glorious would it be if they did an actual TOS prequel series? No more TMP-forward glow-y shit all over the ships, just as an example. Cage-era uniforms and tech.

"But it was so cheeeeeee-zeeeeee!" There's your challenge. Give us a reason why it looked cheesy "but actually wasn't." Maybe after what Archer encountered, they ruggedized the tech. Maybe it's all bulky and clunky-looking because it's tougher.

Bryan Fuller is leaving the captain's chair on CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery.

Fuller has stepped down from his role as showrunner on the digital series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

"We are extremely happy with the creative direction of Star Trek: Discovery and the strong foundation that Bryan Fuller has helped us create for the series," producers CBS Television Studios said in a statement. "Due to Bryan’s other projects, he is no longer able to oversee the day-to-day of Star Trek, but he remains an executive producer, and will continue to map out the story arc for the entire season. Alex Kurtzman, co-creator and executive producer, along with Fuller’s producing partners and longtime collaborators, Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, will also continue to oversee the show with the existing writing and producing team. Bryan is a brilliant creative talent and passionate Star Trek fan, who has helped us chart an exciting course for the series. We are all committed to seeing this vision through and look forward to premiering Star Trek: Discovery this coming May 2017.”
