Movies Some movies watched in 2026

I watched "Mrs Harris goes to Paris"
I give it a 9 out of 10
It was just perfect for the mood I was in. It was light hearted, fun, inspiring and slightly relatable.
 
Friendship (2024) - Tim Robinson develops an unhealthy obsession with his cool new neighbour (Paul Rudd0, while his marriage to his wife (Kate Mara) beaks down. I watched Robinson's tv show The Chair Company last year and have watched some of his stuff on youtube, so I was familiar with what to expect. If you've never seen him before I'm not sure if you'd like this as much, as a lot of the humour comes down to the way he delivers his lines and the surreal nature of everything (Robinson's character is strange but everyone in the movie is a bit "off" in some way.) It feels almost like a drama at time but is just surreal enough to stay within comedy. For me, anyway! I liked it and laughed out loud a few times. I certainly found it better than The Naked Gun (the new one) with one scene with a crazy drunk guy being funnier than anything in that. But it's probably an acquired taste and I'd say The Chair Company tackled some similar themes and maybe did it better (TCC is much more surreal and gets downright creepy at times.) But obviously you can go a bit further with things in an 8 episode season of tv than a 100 minute movie. So I don't know if I should recommend it unless you have my brain.
 
Avengers infinity war

Thought I would give this a watch in the run up to doomsday.

Still great, although sometimes Thanos didn't look as good as I remembered, maybe is compression on Disney?

Don't think I noticed anything new, Fury pushing throw a guy while he was disintegrating seemed rude, I wonder if he came back a bit mixed up?
 
Watched endgame again, was fine, seems like a couple of scenes where they forgot to make Thor fat.

Guardians of the galaxy, first time watching since seeing the third one, it's odd to see the police using PX129 as Rockets name.

Gamora seemed very thin and underpowered compared to the woman that carried a massive ship gun over her shoulder in the second one, to see her being taken away to be killed in the prison by two skinny looking prisoners.

The film looked georgous in a way that few later films did.
 
They should have forgotten to make Thor fat for the whole movie.
 
Antman

Part of the rewatch, always a fun watch, the physics of being small gets a pass, but tanks shouldn't be survivable falling from that height, not to mention the fuel in the tank should have gone bad years ago, I know, I'm overthinking it.
 
In the sequel they have a whole small building that they return to normal size, but how does the plumbing work? Were you just shitting out the window, Ant-Man?
 
Ant man and the wasp, didn't spot anything new, apart from the phrase, this is the way, years before Mando said it.

Also the second film in a row that leaves a giant ant just living in the world never to be mentioned again.

The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) - Felt like watching something completely dum and undemanding so put this on. I enjoyed it overall. Daniel Randcliffe did a very good job and there was a few bits that made me laugh out loud. The human stuff, when it worked, was quite charming. I liked it best when it went completely over the top silly, like Al rescuing Madonna from Pablo Escobar in Colombia by gunning a lot of people to death. I do actually wish it had gone even more over the top and weird though. Like I enjoy his songs, but seeing them played out in concerts wasn't really that funny when you can just listen to them instead. I'd rather have had more wackiness in their place. It ended up dragging a bit. But hey, if you like Weird Al you've probably already watched it and appreciate the tone of it.

It's sad to think it's been 40 years since Madonna had Weird Al assassinated, but at least his legacy lives on.

Huge Weird Al fan. He taught me it was ok to be weird. I did watch and appreciate the tone of the movie. His songs are enjoyable without video, but even more enjoyable with video.
 
It's a shame the movie didn't come out a couple of years later so they could have made some kind of Weird Al/Weird A.I. joke.
 
Maxxxine (2024) - Third in the series of horror movies by director Ti West which started with X and continued with Pearl. This one returns to the character Maxine Minx (the fantastic Mia Goth) from X, as she tries to make it big in Hollywood in the eighties. And, sad to say, I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as the other two. Pearl is probably my favourite horror movie ever(!?) and anything is going to suffer following that, but this one felt it was too obsessed with recreating the feel of like an eighties exploitation B-movie type thing and the plot ended up kind of muddled? There's quite a lot of subplots going on, whereas the other two were more straightforward, and it felt like none of them really got enough time. Like when Maxine's friends are getting murdered it probably would have been better if we'd gotten moments where the audience got to know them or a sign that Maxine actually liked them, but there's not much at all. There a couple of great moments like when Maxine stomps a guy's balls in and when she punches the shit out of Kevin Bacon. And I enjoyed Giancarlo Esposito as her agent who is so dedicated to his client that he'll arrange to crush a guy in a car. But there's other parts that are just really silly like Kevin Bacon chasing Maxine through a Hollywood backlot - maybe this is trying to create a specific feeling or reference something but whatever it was wasn't appealing to me. And the final villain is just a completely over the top ham that did nothing for me (again maybe this is ON PURPOSE but it didn't work for me anyway.) Goth is still great and always compelling to watch, but for quite a bit of the movie she isn't really doing much but reacting to things, and the end feels like an attempt to recreate the classic "I'm a fucking star!" moment from X but without the same success. So yeah I still enjoyed watching it but I wish it had been more.
