Biden awards Presidential Medal of Freedom to Ledecky​


Katie Ledecky, the most decorated women's swimmer in history, and Jim Thorpe, a multisport athlete who was the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States, were among 19 people to be honored on Friday by President Joe Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Ledecky is a seven-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming, taking home at least one gold in each of the past three Olympics. She will compete at the Paris Olympics this summer. Her 16 individual gold medals at the world championships are the most by any swimmer, man or woman.

victor wembanyama headline france's preliminary olympic roster
Fresh off winning the NBA Rookie of the Year, the 7-foot-3 Wembanyama will bolster France's medal aspirations alongside key players such as Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum, and Evan Fournier. In Gobert and Wembanyama, France boasts two of the NBA's best defensive players. Gobert won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award for the fourth time of his career, narrowly beating out Wembanyama. At the Olympics, France will be in Group B alongside Germany, Japan and the winner of an upcoming qualifying tournament.

u.s. triathlete taylor knibb also nabs game spot in cycling
Knibb, 26, ripped over the flat, out-and-back course around Charleston, West Virginia, in 45 minutes, 54 seconds Wednesday, beating favorite Kristen Faulkner by 11 seconds. Three-time Olympian Amber Neben was 49 seconds back in third place. Three years ago, Knibb became the youngest woman ever on the U.S. triathlon team for the Olympics. She finished 16th in the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics and helped the Americans win the silver medal in the mixed team relay.

olympic brendan kerry to appeal sexual misconduct ban
Kerry, who won seven consecutive Australian figure skating titles from 2013, provided alcohol to and had sexual intercourse with a then 16 or 17-year-old figure skater in the US in 2016 and 2017, ESPN reported. Kerry was a registered coach with US Figure Skating in the 2016-17 season when the misconduct was alleged to have occurred.

UFC's Gane will carry Olympic torch ahead of 2024 Paris Games​


Ciryl Gane is set to be a torchbearer for the 2024 Olympic Games for his home country of Paris, France. The former UFC interim heavyweight champion will be part of the traditional Olympic flame relay that goes through the host nation in the lead-up to the opening ceremony and Gane will be part of that historic event. The French fighter proudly revealed the news on his Instagram. The relay is currently underway and started on Thursday, May 9 in Marseille, France. The relay will spend the next eleven weeks traveling through France as nearly 10,000 individuals will serve as torchbearers this year. Gane will take his position during the 24th stage of the relay, which goes from the Deux-Sèvres region to Les Sables-d'Olonne.

2024 U.S. Classic: Who made a case for the Olympic gymnastics team?​


The best gymnasts in the country competed at the U.S. Classic on Saturday night at the XL Centerr, giving an early look at who has the best chance to make the roster for the five-member Olympic team headed for Paris in July. It was a night blemished by injuries and falls, with Konnor McClain suffering an Achilles' injury during floor warmups and Gabby Douglas withdrawing from the competition after recording two falls during her opening rotation on bars. But there still were several bright spots. Simone Biles won the all-around title and floor, and finished second on bars and beam, and a number of other gymnasts made solid cases for their spot on the Olympic team. So, with two major competitions left to go -- the U.S. gymnastics championships and the Olympic trials -- who has the best chance at this point at booking their ticket to Paris? Here's our look so far, based solely on Saturday's competition.

gabby douglas pulls out of u.s. championship, ends 2024 olympic bid
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas has withdrawn from competition at the U.S. gymnastics championships this weekend in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an ankle injury she suffered during training this week.

The injury ends Douglas' improbable bid to make the 2024 Paris Olympic team after an eight-year hiatus. At 28, Douglas would have been the oldest American woman to compete in gymnastics at the Olympics since 1952. Despite the injury, Douglas said she is proud of what she accomplished over her 18-month comeback. Douglas became the first Black gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title at the 2012 London Games

olympics 2024: iba to award prize money for boxing medals
Based on the placings of boxers at the July 26-Aug. 11 Games, the IBA said it will award $100,000 to gold medalists, $50,000 for silver medals and $25,000 for bronze.

The boxing tournaments at the Paris Games are being organized by the IOC, but there are fears it might be excluded from future Games, with the sport not on the initial program for Los Angeles 2028.

carapaz misses out on ecuador's road cycling olympic sport
Carapaz was the first Ecuadorian to win a grand tour, the 2019 Giro d'Italia. He also made the podium at the Tour de France and Spanish Vuelta, but hasn't finished any grand tour since 2022. This year, he won a stage and finished seventh in the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland in April.
