U.S. men win first team gymnastics medal since '08; Japan gold​

They closed the gap. Three years ago, at the Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. men walked into the Ariake Gymnastics Centre at a six-point deficit before competition even began and ultimately finished fifth. Three years later, they are Olympic bronze medalists for the first time since 2008. Japan won gold by 0.532 points over its longtime rival, China. It was Japan's eighth team gold and first since the Rio Games in 2016. China scored 259.062, and the U.S. finished less than two points behind Japan's 259.594 with a 257.793, proof it is catching the top teams in the world. Before Monday night, it had been 16 years since the U.S. men's team finished on the podium in Olympic competition. That 2008 team was similarly filled with young, first-time Olympians who struggled on day one of competition and rebounded in thrilling fashion in the team final to take bronze.

Ryan Murphy wins bronze before finding out he'll be 'girl dad'​

After receiving the Olympic bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke Monday night at La Defense Arena, American Ryan Murphy had a memorable surprise waiting for him. As he walked around the arena doing a victory lap with his new medal hanging around his neck, Murphy's wife, Bridget Konttinen, held up a sign revealing the gender of their unborn baby from the stands: "Ryan, it's a girl." Murphy, who said the baby is due in January, later confirmed he hadn't known they would be welcoming a daughter. Italy's Thomas Ceccon won the gold in the race Monday with a time of 52.00 seconds, and China's Xu Jiayu took the silver.

U.S. Olympic officials call for truce in doping feud​

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee chief on Thursday urged the warring American and world anti-doping bodies to work together while assuring Olympic officials they will support WADA as the supreme anti-doping authority. The USOPC, along with the 2028 Los Angeles and 2034 Salt Lake City Olympic host committees, has been caught in the crossfire in an increasingly bitter feud between the World Anti-Doping Agency and the United States Anti-Doping Agency. The International Olympic Committee has issued a stern warning to U.S. sports officials: support WADA as the global leader in the fight against doping or risk losing the Games.

The WADA and USADA feud had escalated Wednesday when Reuters reported that the global body was taking the U.S. agency to the Independent Compliance Review Committee next month in a landmark move that could jeopardize the country hosting the 2028 and 2034 Olympics. WADA is taking the step as a result of a dispute with USADA over its handling of a case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance in 2021. The move would be the first time WADA has taken the U.S. anti-doping body to the CRC and could have huge implications for global sport given the U.S.'s huge commercial influence.

Report on Chinese swimmer doping fuels anger over testing​

The New York Times reported Tuesday that two top Chinese swimmers -- including one on this year's Olympic team -- tested positive for a banned steroid in 2022 but were eventually cleared to compete by Chinese officials. The Times cited two people with knowledge of the matter but did not name them. This is the third incident reported over the last several months by the Times and others in which the Chinese have blamed food contamination for positive drug tests. The World Anti-Doping Agency accepted the results of the Chinese investigations.

In the most widely reported incident, 11 swimmers named to the Chinese Olympic team were among 23 who tested positive for a banned substance six months before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. They were allowed to compete and went on to win gold medals in three events. One of those swimmers, Zhang Yufei, has won two bronzes in France, one in the women's 100 butterfly and another as part of the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Chinese swimmers in Paris have pushed back against doping allegations and say they are tested more than athletes from other countries. In a statement, WADA acknowledged the two Chinese had tested positive and were provisionally suspended for "trace amounts of a prohibited substance metandienone," a powerful muscle-builder known on the street as D-Bol. The provisional suspension lasted about a year.

Jamaica's Shericka Jackson to contest only 200m in Paris
She had clocked her season's best of 10.84 seconds to win the 100 at the Jamaican trials but pulled up with a calf cramp in her final outing before the Games in Hungary on July 9.

Jackson had been considered a top contender in the 100 after winning bronze in the event at the Tokyo Games and finishing second at each of the past two world championships. But she has shown better results of late in the 200, winning the world title in 2022 and 2023.

Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula fall in Olympics women's doubles
Gauff and her U.S. teammate, Jessica Pegula, were the top-seeded women's pair but were eliminated in the second round by the Czech duo Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 in a match tiebreaker.

Stewart, Wilson overwhelm Japan in U.S opener​

The United States women's basketball team is likely to get stronger as the Olympics wear on, as it builds chemistry and gets reps playing together. But, in the meantime, it sure is a luxury to have superior size. The Americans leaned into that advantage in their Olympic opener, bruising the smaller Japan team in a 102-76 victory in a rematch of the 2021 gold medal game in Tokyo. They are now 56-0 in the Olympics since 1992 as they take the first step toward winning their eighth consecutive gold.

A'Ja Wilson was relentless in looking for her shot and chasing loose balls, making 10 of 16 shots for 24 points and adding 13 rebounds, six of them coming on the offensive end. She also had four blocks. Breanna Stewart was able to generate easy looks by running the floor and getting free in transition by just outrunning the Japanese defenders, one of her trademarks. She made 11 of 15 shots for 22 points plus eight rebounds. She also had two blocks.

Japan was led by Maki Takada's 22 points.

Simone Biles wins Olympic all-around title; bronze for Suni Lee​

Simone Biles is back on top of the gymnastics world. But it wasn't easy, nor was it even a given for much of the Olympic all-around competition on Thursday night at Bercy Arena. By the end, she had earned her second gold medal in the event -- becoming just the third woman to earn the title multiple times and the first to do it in nonconsecutive Games. But it took everything -- including several eponymous and superhuman skills -- she had. The 27-year-old American has become known for her large margins of victory throughout her career, but Thursday was one of her closest calls during an international meet. After a challenging rotation on uneven bars, which saw her legs nearly hit the floor after she misjudged a transition, Biles had fallen to the unfamiliar position of third place in the standings at the halfway mark.

After closing the competition on floor and earning a massive 15.066 behind her high-flying tumbling that was loaded with difficulty, she had secured a 59.131 final score -- 1.199 better than silver medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil. Biles' teammate Sunisa Lee, the 2020 Olympic all-around champion, claimed the bronze medal. She had been looking to become the first woman in 56 years to defend the title, but, after dealing with multiple career-jeopardizing kidney diseases since Tokyo, she seemed more than pleased to simply return to the podium in any spot. This was Biles' sixth career Olympic gold medal and ninth medal overall. She is the first female gymnast to win nine career medals at the Games since Nadia Comaneci in 1980. Biles is far from done this week. She is slated to compete in the event finals for vault, beam and floor and could realistically claim medals on all three.

Katie Ledecky becomes most decorated American woman in Olympic history​

Katie Ledecky is now the most decorated American woman in Olympic history. With a silver medal Thursday in the 4x200 meter relay, Ledecky won her 13th medal, breaking a tie with swimmers Natalie Coughlin, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres. Ledecky has eight golds, four silvers and one bronze in her Olympic career. The eight golds are just one shy of the women's record, held by Larisa Latynina, a gymnast from the Soviet Union whose final Olympics was in Tokyo (1964). The 27-year-old Ledecky also becomes the most decorated woman in swimming history, regardless of country, and is second only in the Olympic pool to American icon Michael Phelps, who has 28 medals all-time.

U.S. topples South Sudan to make Olympic basketball quarters
On Wednesday, depth was again the engine in a 103-86 win against upstart South Sudan that moved Team USA to 2-0 in Olympic play and punched its ticket into next week's quarterfinals. The Americans' bench was devastating, racking up 66 points (compared with just 14 from South Sudan's) and going on two key runs that essentially defined the game.

U.S. men lose to Poland; 0-2 in 3x3 in Olympic basketball pool play
Bogucki had 7 points and 5 rebounds for Poland, which lost to France on Tuesday. Barry and Travis led the U.S. with 6 points each. Fredette, who is the only player with NBA experience in the 3x3 competition, added 3. The U.S. struggled from long-range, making just 2 of 15 attempts.

The International Olympic Committee on Thursday defended its decision to allow two female boxers to compete at the Paris Olympics despite an ongoing gender controversy, saying the pair were facing "aggression" because of an arbitrary decision. Algeria's Imane Khelif, who won her round of 16 welterweight bout over Italy's Angela Carini in 46 seconds, and Taiwan's double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who is fighting on Friday, have been cleared to compete in the Olympics.

Khelif and Lin were disqualified by the International Boxing Association at the 2023 world championships after failing an unspecified gender eligibility test. The IBA was stripped of its recognition by the IOC last year over governance and finance issues, and the Olympic body is now running the boxing competition in Paris.

The IOC said the IBA decision to disqualify the boxers last year was arbitrary and the main cause for the furor that has seen people such as British author J. K. Rowling and billionaire Elon Musk voice their opposition to them competing in the Games. "These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA," the IOC said in its statement. "Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.
