The team has said it will honor Russell in other ways this season, including two nights in his honor one for the Oct. 18 season opener and one on Feb. 12, which would have been his 89th birthday. The Celtics will also wear a special Russell-themed jersey for some of their games. There will also be something on their regular uniforms to honor him.

Robert Sarver says he's starting process to sell NBA's Phoenix Suns, WNBA's Phoenix Mercury


Owner Robert Sarver on Wednesday announced that he has begun the process to sell both the NBA's Phoenix Suns and WNBA's Phoenix Mercury franchises. Sarver was suspended one year and fined $10 million last week after an NBA investigation found that he used the N-word at least five times "when recounting the statements of others. "Sarver also was involved in "instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees," including "sex-related comments" and inappropriate comments on employees' appearances. Sarver bought the teams in July 2004 for about $400 million. With approximately one-third of the stake, he is not the lone owner, but he is the primary one. Forbes recently estimated the value of the Suns at $1.8 billion.

Brooklyn Nets' Kyrie Irving: Gave up 4-year, $100M-plus extension to be unvaccinated


Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving says he turned down a four-year extension prior to the 2020-21 season because of his decision not to get the COVID-19 vaccination. Irving, who is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and was forced to miss home games in Brooklyn until late March because of a New York City vaccination mandate.

"I gave up four years, 100-and-something million deciding to be unvaccinated and that was the decision," Irving said during Nets media day on Monday. "[Get this] contract, get vaccinated or be unvaccinated and there's a level of uncertainty of your future, whether you're going to be in this league, whether you're going to be on this team, so I had to deal with that real-life circumstance of losing my job for this decision."
