St. Louis Cardinals All-Stars Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt can't play in Toronto series due to COVID-19 vaccination status


The St. Louis will be without All-Star infielders Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidtr for their two-game series against the Blue Jays in Toronto this week because of Canada's COVID-19 vaccination rules, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told reporters Sunday. Catcher Austin Romine also will miss the series because he is unvaccinated against COVID-19. To enter the country, the Canadian government requires a person to have received a second COVID-19 vaccine dose -- or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine -- at least 14 days before entry.

Verlander, who leads all active players in strikeouts, now has 3,121 in his career, moving him past Curt Schilling (3,116) and Bob Gibson (3,117) into 14th place on the all-time list.Verlander (12-3) allowed six hits without a walk and lowered his ERA to 1.89, which ranks third in the majors. Detroit Tigers place unvaccinated Andrew Chafin on restricted list ahead of series in Toronto against Blue Jays


Unvaccinated left-hander Andrew Chafin was put on the restricted list by the Detroit Tigers before the opener of a four-game series in Toronto on Thursday. Chafin signed a two-year, $13 million contract with Detroit in March. He will lose $142,857 from his $6.5 million salary this season. Chafin had a career-high five saves and 64 strikeouts in 71 games in 2021, splitting the season between the Chicago Cubs and Oakland. His 1.83 ERA ranked fifth among major league relievers.

Jackson Holliday slipped on a Baltimore Orioles jersey, jammed the team's cap over his long, sandy blond hair and grinned broadly as the photographers clicked away. And boy, did he have reason to smile. The 18-year-old high schooler and No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB amateur draft signed a contract Wednesday with an $8.19 million signing bonus. Jackson Holliday batted .685 with 29 doubles, six triples, 17 home runs and 79 RBIs as a senior for Stillwater High in Oklahoma. He also stole 30 bases and scored 74 runs.

Sources: New York Mets acquiring Tyler Naquin, Phillip Diehl in trade with Cincinnati Reds
Naquin, a first-round draft pick 10 years ago, was batting .246 with seven homers and 33 RBI in 56 games for the struggling Reds - Diehl, a Cincinnati native, has made 21 career major league appearances. He was 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 23 1/3 innings at Triple-A Louisville this year.

Cincinnati received outfielder Hector Rodríguez (The 18-year-old hit .356 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 26 games in the rookie-level complex league in Florida). and right-hander Jose Acuña (The 19-year-old is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA in eight minor league games this year, including five starts).

Report: San Diego Padres, Joe Musgrove closing in on 5-year, $100 million deal

All-Star right-hander Joe Musgrove is on the cusp of receiving a five-year, $100 million contract from his hometown San Diego Padres that would start next year.


The deal was first reported by the New York Post. Musgrove would be the first pitcher in Padres history to earn a $100 million contract, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. Musgrove, coming off the first All-Star Game appearance of his seven-year career, is 8-3 with a 2.63 ERA heading into his scheduled home start against the Twins on Saturday. He has an $8,625,000 salary and was on track to be eligible for free agency after the World Series.
