Daniel Naroditsky (29)
This is one of those rare deaths of someone I never knew personally that hits like a bucket of cold water. I audibly said “WHAT THE FUCK” when I saw the headline.
I take my chess relatively seriously, and that means I have to actually read and learn from players magnitudes stronger than me. Vibe chess only gets you so far.
Danya published his first chess book when he was 14 years old and went on to become one of the world’s strongest Grandmasters and as such was considered in the Super Grandmaster class. He ticked the box of being far better than I’ll ever be (duh), but the way he was able to teach high-level concepts in patient and non-condescending ways, and not gloss over things that came naturally to him, made him an outstanding teacher which doesn't automatically happen just because you're a genius player. His huge library of teaching material will live on much longer than he has because the quality of not only his chess brain but his teaching brain is undeniable.
It was also the first experience I'd ever had being a student (online or otherwise) of someone so much younger than myself. It was a good ego check.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours reading his books and watching his videos, and he genuinely elevated my game to a higher level than I expected at my age. I was already quite happy with my chess ability and, since I was never going to be a FIDE or Grandmaster, I wasn’t looking to go back to the old dry learning material from years gone by. Danya changed that with his videos and books, and I’m a better player because of it.
This one has shook me up. He was far, far too young, and it
seemingly came out of nowhere. I’m hearing he was acting erratic on one of his latest streams now though, so it could have been suicide, though that’s just a rumour for now since no cause of death has been given.
Here he is crushing Magnus Carlsen at bullet from Magnus perspective
