I LOVE DOGS TOO but I've always been a city dweller, and dogs require yard space, and more time and attention, like children.
Cats are less hassle, and are happy to sometimes interact with you, and sometimes for each of you to have your space.
And now I understand why I'm not married...

OK. I forgot to put this in my recent blog post and I'm too lazy to look for the cute animals thread. I have goldfish. Over a decade ago I had goldfish in a large ceramic rainwater pot. I got them to keep mosquito larvae in check but I became quite fond of them. Then we had a winter cold enough to freeze water enough to crack the pot and they died.
A few years after that, after moving from Oregon to Kentucky, I got a house to use for a rental that, for various reasons, seemed to need a fish pond. But it was a rental property and not only can renters not take care of something like goldfish, I was never able to get it to maintain a constant water level. Finally I decided to sell the house. As a last-ditch attempt to keep the fish pond I got a rigid 50 gallon tub to put within the pond. But it didn't work and looked terrible so in the end I listened to my realtor and had a bunch of dirt delivered to fill in the pond.
But before I did, I collected up around 20 gallons of pond water and the 3 PetSmart "feeder" goldfish I'd reintroduced the week before. I drove them, the water, and the 50 gallon pond back to my house (along with some of the plants from the pond), dug a hole for the pond, put in the water, plants, and fish and refilled the buckets so the chemicals could evaporate away and I could top off the pond. That was, I dunno, a month or so ago. At first the fish were very aloof (and the water was very cloudy) but eventually the water cleared up and the fish have become more and more friendly (as well as larger). It has made me fairly happy and made me realize how much I'd missed fishies.
