Panthers break franchise mark for total yards in first half vs. Lions

The Carolina Panthers have been wanting quarterback Sam Darnold to run more, and with 9:35 left in the second quarter of Saturday's game against the Detroit Lions, he ran to perfection. It was part of a dominant first half of rushing that set a Panthers franchise record. The Panthers, who gained just 21 yards rushing last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, gained 240 yards in the first half to become the ninth team in the last 30 seasons to accumulate at least 200 rushing yards in a first half. The last team to do it was the Houston Texans with exactly 200 -- against the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 26, 2018. Carolina also set a franchise record for most yards in the first half with 364. They had 349 in the first half against Atlanta Falcons during their Super Bowl run in 2015.

CB Jaycee Horn suffers broken wrist in Panthers' victory

Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn suffered a broken left wrist in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 37-23 victory over the Detroit Lions, team officials confirmed. A league source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that Horn broke the radius in the wrist, an injury that could jeopardize the rest of his season. It would be a blow to Carolina (6-9) to lose its top corner heading into next week's showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-8) with first place in the NFC South on the line. Horn entered Sunday's game with a team-leading three interceptions.

Truly a honor to be back with Panthers, says Josh Norman, 35
Norman was signed to the practice squad Monday with the plan to elevate him to the 53-man roster in time for the 1 p.m. game against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. Carolina (6-9) can win the division if it beats Tampa Bay (7-8) and New Orleans (6-9). That also would help Wilks build his case as he seeks to go from interim to full-time coach after the season.

NEW AGE POSTING
Carolina (24) @ Tampa Bay (30)

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are headed back to the playoffs, confident they're still capable of making this a special season. Brady threw for 432 yards and three long touchdowns to Mike Evans, and Bucs (8-8) erased a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit for the second week in a row to clinch their second straight NFC South championship with a 30-24 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Evans finished with 10 catches for 207 yards, scoring on receptions of 63, 57, and 30 yards and becoming the first player in NFL history to begin a career with nine consecutive seasons with 1,000-plus yards receiving.

The Panthers, who had won four of six to climb back into playoff contention after firing coach Matt Rhule and trading star running back Christian McCaffrey, could have clinched their first NFC South title since 2015 by beating the Bucs and then winning at New Orleans. Darnold threw for 341 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also lost two fumbles while falling to 3-2 since becoming Carolina’s starter on Thanksgiving weekend.

Pain of losing shot at NFC South title shows how far Panthers have come

The Carolina Panthers' locker room was somber late Sunday afternoon. Players sat in their uniforms longer than normal, some staring into space and shaking their heads in disbelief that their postseason hopes were over. It was the type of emotion one would expect from a team that had just been eliminated from a playoff game, not playoff contention. They had the Bucs down 14-0 in the second quarter and led 21-10 going into the fourth quarter before quarterback Tom Brady began playing like the seven-time Super Bowl champion he is, rather than the aging 45-year-old he has looked like of late. That added to the frustration because players could almost taste their chance to make the playoffs with a win Sunday followed by another victory next week at the New Orleans Saints. Now the division title is Tampa Bay’s. So now the Panthers (6-10) are left to play out the season in New Orleans and then enter the period of uncertainty that comes with a coaching search. While the locker room is almost 100% behind Wilks, nobody knows what owner David Tepper is thinking.

Source: Panthers owner, Jim Harbaugh talked coaching job

Panthers owner David Tepper has had a conversation with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh about the opening Carolina will have for the head-coach position once the 2022 season ends, according to a league source. The conversation was not characterized as an interview, the source said. Interviews will not begin until after Carolina (6-10) finishes the season under interim coach Steve Wilks on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Wilks, according to league sources, is considered a strong candidate for the full-time job after replacing Matt Rhule following a 1-4 start and putting Carolina in position to win the NFC South before a Week 17 loss at Tampa Bay. Harbaugh's career as an NFL player actually ended with Carolina in 2001. He was signed midseason and dressed for six games, but never played a down for the 1-15 team.

Carolina (10) @ New Orleans (7)

Eddy Pineiro kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired, and the Carolina Panthers closed out their season with an opportunistic 10-7 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Darnold finished 5 of 15 for 43 yards and was intercepted twice, winning despite having a quarterback rating of 2.8. But the Panthers rushed for 171 yards, led by Chuba Hubbard's 69 yards on 21 carries. Carolina scored its only TD on a fumble by Darnold that was recovered in the end zone by Panthers lineman Michael Jordan.

The Saints finished with some wide statistical advantages, outgaining Carolina 304 yards to 203, but the game remained tight until the end because of New Orleans' inability to score on four possessions inside the Panthers 40-yard line. New Orleans' Andy Dalton was 15 of 25 for 171 yards and one touchdown to Chris Olave. Alvin Kamara rushed for 107 yards.

Examining Panthers head coaching candidates, as focus turns to long term QB fix
Those interviewed thus far are interim coach Steve Wilks, former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell and former Colts coach Frank Reich.

Panthers owner David Tepper must make incredible hire at head coach
In the eyes of the players and many around the NFL, Wilks did that in his 12 games at the helm, winning more games (six) than former coach Matt Rhule did in each of his two-plus seasons (5-12, 5-11, 1-4) while getting Carolina (7-10) within one win of making the playoffs as the NFC South champions.
