Valdez stops Wilson for interim WBO title; Estrada now undisputed champ

Oscar Valdez stopped Liam Wilson in Round 7 on Friday evening in Glendale, Arizona, to claim the interim WBO junior lightweight title. Valdez (32-2, 24 KOs) jumped off the stool and blasted Wilson with a series of shots along the ropes to open the seventh. Later in the round, he landed two consecutive flush right hands. A follow-up barrage of punches rattled Wilson, who appeared on the verge of going down. Wilson (13-3, 7 KOs) steadied himself, but moments later, another flurry of hard punches left him overwhelmed as the referee halted the action with 12 seconds remaining in Round 7.

A 33-year-old Mexican boxer, Valdez was coming off a decision loss to Emanuel Navarrete in August. The defeat was Valdez's second in his previous three fights (the other to Shakur Stevenson in 2022). Wilson, too, lost to Navarrete in February 2023. The 28-year-old floored Navarrete in Round 4 before he was stopped in the ninth. Wilson rebounded with two wins in Australia to close the year.

Minnesota State caps dual D-II hoops titles with men's victory

Kyreese Willingham buried a 3-pointer with a second remaining, and Minnesota State beat Nova Southeastern 88-85 to win its first Division II championship at the Ford Center on Saturday. Minnesota State (35-2) became just the third school in any division to win both the men's and women's championships in the same season. The women beat Texas Women's University 89-73 on Friday. Connecticut accomplished the feat twice at the Division I level, doing so in 2004 and 2014. Central Missouri State won both D-II titles in 1984.

ncaa approves new transfer rule allowing immediate eligibility
The legislation will not limit the number of times an athlete can transfer -- and there are still two transfer windows -- but they can't transfer midyear and play for a second school in the same season. Although the new rule is tied to academic progress, some in college athletics have expressed concern about the long-term implications for graduation rates.

miami's leading rusher henry parrish jr. enters transfer portal
Parrish was the team's leading rusher in 2023, with 625 yards and six touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing yards in 2022, with 616 yards and four touchdowns.

Sources: Terence Crawford to fight Israil Madrimov for title

Terence Crawford, ESPN's No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer, will move up to 154 pounds to challenge Israil Madrimov for his WBA junior middleweight title Aug. 3 in Los Angeles, sources told ESPN. The event will be presented by Riyadh Season under His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, the chair of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority in association with Sela Sport. There will be a news conference Wednesday in New York to announce the bout. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made a major commitment to boxing since 2019, when it staged the Anthony Joshua-Andy Ruiz heavyweight championship rematch. The kingdom's interest in boxing grew exponentially when Alalshikh entered the fray last year with October's Tyson Fury-Francis Ngannou fight in the capital city of Riyadh.

Saudi Arabian officials are branching out with their first boxing event outside of the kingdom with Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) as he looks to become a four-division champion vs. Madrimov. Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) won the WBA title when he scored a fifth-round TKO victory over Magomed Kurbanov last month in Riyadh on the undercard of Joshua-Ngannou.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza retires

Two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza announced she is retiring from professional tennis at age 30 after an extended time away from the court. Muguruza beat Serena Williams in the 2016 French Open final and Venus Williams in the 2017 Wimbledon final, making her the only player to defeat each Williams sister in a Grand Slam title match. The Spanish player earned 10 career titles and was also the runner-up at 2015 Wimbledon and the 2020 Australian Open. She earned nearly $25 million in prize money -- 13th on the all-time list -- and finished with a win-loss record of 449-238. Her last important victory was the 2021 ATP Finals.

NCAA approves helmet communications for FBS games

College football is adding helmet communication for FBS games, two-minute timeouts at the end of each half and other changes approved this week by the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel. Games featuring FBS teams will give each the option of using coach-to-player communications through the helmet of one player on the field, designated with a green dot on the midline of his helmet. Several teams used helmet communications during the most recent bowl season, but it will now be an option for every game in the sport's top division. Coach-to-player communication will be shut off with 15 seconds left on the play clock or the snap of the ball -- whichever comes first. The NFL and other levels of football, including some high school associations, have long used helmet communication to signal in plays. FBS coaches had discussed implementing the technology for several years, but the NCAA Football Rules Committee didn't propose it until March. Concerns about cost, logistics and the liability and warranties of helmets that would be modified contributed to the delay.

Judge orders Florida State, ACC to mediation to settle suit

A Tallahassee judge has ordered Florida State and the Atlantic Coast Conference to enter mediation in hopes of settling a high-profile lawsuit that could dramatically impact the future of the league. Judge John C. Cooper technically approved the ACC's motion to dismiss Monday but gave FSU seven days to amend its complaint because the university needs more specificity regarding key facts in a case he said "is worth up to half a billion dollars." The conference would have 20 days to respond afterward, and another hearing would be set. The Seminoles are pushing to exit the ACC and explore a more lucrative landing spot, potentially the Big Ten Conference.

The hearing Monday was the latest in dueling lawsuits lodged in December. They include back-and-forth arguments pertaining to jurisdiction, a highly guarded grant-of-rights agreement between member schools and the league, and a confidential TV deal between the ACC and ESPN. The ACC's revenue increased to nearly $617 million during the 2021-22 season, with an average distribution of nearly $39.5 million per school for full members. Still, that leaves ACC schools receiving about $10 million a year less than SEC schools even though ESPN is partnered with both leagues in broadcast deals. Clemson, another ACC school, has joined FSU in challenging the ACC's right to charge hundreds of millions of dollars to leave the conference.

Ryan Garcia scores 3 knockdowns in wild upset of Devin Haney

Ryan Garcia's fitness to fight was questioned in the lead-up to his bout with Devin Haney, a turbulent promotion that was highlighted by Garcia's erratic comments. Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) was a major underdog and virtually counted out entering Saturday evening. His blinding, powerful left hook turned the tide as Garcia scored three knockdowns to pull the upset via majority decision at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. One judge scored the bout 112-112 but was overruled by scores of 114-110 and 115-109 for Garcia. However, Garcia wasn't eligible to win Haney's WBC junior welterweight title after he weighed 143.2 pounds Friday for the 140-pound contest. Haney remains the champion in defeat, but it's Garcia who scored the career-best win by knocking off ESPN's No. 6 pound-for-pound boxer.

Caitlin Clark set to sign new 8-year deal with Nike, reports say

Catlin Clark appears to be on the cusp of setting another record. The most prolific scorer in NCAA Division I history and the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft will continue her association with Nike by signing a $28 million contract that spans eight years and includes a signature shoe. The Wall Street Journal and The Athletic reported the pending deal, citing unnamed people familiar with the negotiations between the sportswear giant and Clark's agents. Excel Sports Management, which represents Clark, and Nike did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press. Clark's initial name, image and likeness deal, signed in 2022, expired at the end of the 2023-24 college season. The new deal would be the richest sponsorship contract for a women's basketball player.

college sports leaders in deep talks to settle nil antitrust case vs. ncaa
The NCAA and its power conferences are defendants in an antitrust class action lawsuit, House v. NCAA, which argues that the association is breaking federal law by placing any restrictions on how athletes make money from selling the rights to their name, image or likeness. A settlement would provide some legal relief for a college sports industry that's been peppered by lawsuits. It could also serve as a keystone piece to formulating a more stable future.

tiger woods accepts special exemption to play in u.s. open
Woods, a three-time U.S. Open winner, last won the event in 2008. While he has lifetime exemptions into the Masters and PGA Championship and can play in The Open until he's 60 as a former winner of those tournaments, Woods' exemption into the U.S. Open ran out in 2023.

**********
It's the first time Woods hasn't qualified for a major championship since the 1996 PGA Championship, when he was still an amateur. The 124th U.S. Open will be played on Pinehurst's Course No. 2 on June 13-16. Woods carded 82-77 on the weekend at Augusta National and finished last among players to make the cut at 16-over 304, his worst 72-hole total in a professional event.
