Feherty will make his debut at the tour's third event later this month at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. A former professional golfer, Feherty played for Europe in the 1991 Ryder Cup and won five titles on the European Tour before shifting to broadcasting in 1997.

Darlington Raceway signs Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall in rare NIL deal between NASCAR track and college football star
Darlington Raceway has signed Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall in the first lengthy name, image and likeness partnership between a NASCAR racetrack and a college football player. Atlanta Motor Speedway has done one-off social media promotions with a trio of Georgia football players to promote its most recent NASCAR Cup Series events, but McCall's NIL agreement with Darlington Raceway, NASCAR's oldest superspeedway, is for a full year. McCall will promote the racetrack's annual Labor Day race weekend, including a NASCAR "Crown Jewel" event -- the Southern 500 on Sept. 4 -- as the face of the speedway's marketing campaigns, which will include the use of his social media channels.

United States sprint great Allyson Felix joins IOC athletes' commission
American sprint great Allyson Felix and a refugee cyclist originally from Afghanistan joined the International Olympic Committee's athletes' commission on Thursday. Felix is the most decorated woman track and field athlete in Olympic history with seven gold medals and joins the commission after winning her 14th career world championship title. Felix came out of retirement last week to run the prelims of the 4x400-meter relay. The American team went on to win the final Sunday at the world championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Russian Olympic Committee says it's making plans for Paris Olympics in 2024 despite sports bans
With two years to go until the Paris Olympics open, Russia is making plans for its athletes to live and compete in the French capital even though many remain barred from upcoming qualification events because of the war in Ukraine. Russian Olympic Committee president Stanislav Pozdnyakov wrote on the Telegram messaging app Tuesday that the country was working to get its athletes access to qualification events and already making plans for the Olympic village in 2024. Most Olympic sports have suspended athletes from Russia and Belarus since the invasion of Ukraine began in February, following a recommendation from the International Olympic Committee. However, the IOC has not suspended the Russian Olympic Committee, the body which enters Russian teams for the Games.

On the college basketball calendar, July has long been a month dedicated to recruiting. Rosters are usually set by then, and coaches can begin to turn toward the future of their programs before going all-in on the upcoming season. For obvious reasons, however, 2020 and 2021 brought some changes to the old model, and July became a more hectic month. In 2020, the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft wasn't even until early August. Last summer, it was early July -- and the transfer portal was still humming in both years. There aren't many changes to the rankings this month, just a few tweaks here and there after taking a fresh look at rosters.

US basketball star Brittney Griner -- who has been held in Russia since February on accusations of drug smuggling will remain in Russian custody through at least July 2, after a Russian court extended her detention, Russian state news agency TASS reported Tuesday. Griner, 31, has been officially classified as "wrongfully detained," a US State Department official told CNN in May. Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in February, when Russian authorities claimed she had cannabis oil in her luggage and accused her of smuggling significant amounts of a narcotic substance, an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and star of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury plays in Russia during that league's offseason."We are on Day 116 since BG has been wrongfully detained," Mercury head coach Vanessa Nygaard said, adding, "She's our teammate, she's an American and we want her back home." For star guard Diana Taurasi, the State Department's announcement that Griner's detention was wrongful signaled to the team that officials are taking the situation seriously, she said Monday.

A Russian court sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison Thursday, an expected conclusion to her trial that should allow negotiations for a prisoner swap to accelerate. Griner, who was arrested Feb. 17 for bringing cannabis into the country, had been prepared for a harsh sentence, sources close to the player said. But she and her supporters have also been aware that Russia was not going to move forward with a trade that could bring her home until her trial was completed. A guilty verdict was considered a foregone conclusion, and Griner pleaded guilty July 7, though the case continued under Russian law.
During sentencing, Judge Anna Sotnikova said she had found that Griner intentionally broke the law and also fined her 1 million rubles (about $16,700). Sotnikova said the time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count toward the sentence. Griner reacted to the sentence with little emotion, listening to the verdict with a blank stare on her face.
