Making ACC Debuts
The three new conference members in Cal, SMU, and Stanford will all play their first-ever ACC games at different times throughout the season. Stanford will be the first of the three to play an ACC game, as the Cardinal will play at Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 20, one day before Cal travels to Florida State for its first conference game on Saturday, Sept. 21. SMU’s first-ever ACC game will come at home versus Florida State the following weekend, Saturday, Sept. 28.[/size]

Hafley went 22-26 in four seasons at Boston College, bringing the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of his four years. Boston College finished 7-6 this season with a win over No. 22 SMU in the Fenway Bowl. Hafley became Boston College's head coach following the 2019 season, taking over for the COVID-19-affected season of 2020. He had one losing record in four years -- 3-9 in 2022.

The attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA on Wednesday that challenged its ban on the use of name, image and likeness compensation in the recruitment of college athletes, and in response to the association's investigation of University of Tennessee.

Clemson gives seven assistants raises; eight get contract extensions​

Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin received a $550,000 raise on Friday, increasing his salary to $1.4 million a year. Defensive tackles coach Nick Eason got a raise of $300,000 to $1.1 million, giving Dabo Swinney's staff three assistants earning more than $1 million a season. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley, hired in January 2023, makes $1.75 million a season.

Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney lead 2024 Hall of Fame class​

The 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement class will honor defense as well as a player many consider the best kickoff/punt returner ever. The seven-member Class of 2024 will include defensive end Julius Peppers, defensive end Dwight Freeney and linebacker Patrick Willis. Devin Hester, the NFL record holder for kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns, and wide receiver Andre Johnson will also be enshrined as modern-era selections. Linebacker Randy Gradishar, who played in his last game in 1983, and defensive tackle Steve McMichael, who retired after the 1994 season, were senior finalists selected to be enshrined.

The Atlantic Coast Conference asked a Florida judge on Friday to press pause on a lawsuit Florida State filed, which claims the conference is breaching its contract, until a similar case concludes in North Carolina. The ACC and Florida State sued each other in late December to resolve a dispute over what the university would have to pay if it opts to leave the conference. Lawyers for the Seminoles estimate the school would have to pay $527 million to withdraw from the league and regain control over its media rights, severing a contract that isn't scheduled to expire until 2036. They argued that those fees are "draconian" and "unreasonable restraints of trade in the State of Florida." The ACC's filing on Friday argues that its grant of rights contract is governed by North Carolina law and that their North Carolina-based lawsuit should take precedence because it was filed first -- one day before Florida State submitted its claim to the Florida court.

Top CB prospect Nate Wiggins suffers hip injury at combine​

Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggens, one of the highest-rated defensive backs in this year's NFL draft, showed his elite speed but limped off the field inside Lucas Oil Stadium to abruptly end his workout at the scouting combine. Wiggins, the No. 16 player on Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest Big Board, ran a blistering unofficial time of 4.29 seconds in his lone attempt in the 40-yard dash -- the fastest among the first group of defensive backs to take the field Friday. Wiggins then limped toward the bench area, at times hopping to keep weight off his right leg, before being helped by a trainer. He told the NFL Network on Friday's broadcast that he suffered a hip flexor injury. Wiggins played 34 games during his career at Clemson, with 18 starts. He finished with three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns.

A Tallahassee judge has ordered Florida State and the Atlantic Coast Conference to enter mediation in hopes of settling a high-profile lawsuit that could dramatically impact the future of the league. Judge John C. Cooper technically approved the ACC's motion to dismiss Monday but gave FSU seven days to amend its complaint because the university needs more specificity regarding key facts in a case he said "is worth up to half a billion dollars." The conference would have 20 days to respond afterward, and another hearing would be set. The Seminoles are pushing to exit the ACC and explore a more lucrative landing spot, potentially the Big Ten Conference.

The hearing Monday was the latest in dueling lawsuits lodged in December. They include back-and-forth arguments pertaining to jurisdiction, a highly guarded grant-of-rights agreement between member schools and the league, and a confidential TV deal between the ACC and ESPN. The ACC's revenue increased to nearly $617 million during the 2021-22 season, with an average distribution of nearly $39.5 million per school for full members. Still, that leaves ACC schools receiving about $10 million a year less than SEC schools even though ESPN is partnered with both leagues in broadcast deals. Clemson, another ACC school, has joined FSU in challenging the ACC's right to charge hundreds of millions of dollars to leave the conference.
