Men's March Madness bracket questions before Selection Sunday​


We finally made it. Selection Sunday. Less than 24 hours until the men's NCAA tournament field is revealed and millions of fans around the country can furiously fill out their brackets. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. The NCAA tournament selection committee still has a few boxes to check before its work is over. This year the bubble is as crowded -- and arguably better -- than we've seen in some time, with conference tournament performances likely securing bids for some teams (Mississippi State, Colorado, among others) and putting seemingly safe teams into precarious positions (Seton Hall and Virginia, to name two).

uconn, houston, purdue, north carolina secure no. 1 seeds
Defending national champion UConn, a day removed from winning the Big East tournament and improving to 31-3, was chosen as the men's No. 1 overall seed. For the Cougars and Boilermakers, Sunday's selections mark the second time in as many years they landed at No. 1. For North Carolina, its No. 1 seed is the fourth and final, and came after much debate amid the committee.

March Madness 2024: Reseeding the men's round of 32​


Well, good news. Or bad news. Depending on whom you support. Time for the annual tradition of reseeding the field of the 32 remaining teams -- one of our more polarizing ventures during the men's NCAA tournament. There have been some highs and some lows in this effort over the years. But the goal is simple: to provide a perspective on where teams stand after each round. This year, you won't see a lot of movement at the top. The highest seeds have solidified their spots over the course of a full season, and by winning their first-round games. For everyone else? It gets more complicated. Oakland has lost just one game since Feb. 8 -- but after the upset of Kentucky and its NBA prospects on Thursday, where should Greg Kampe's squad be ranked now? NC State was an afterthought two weeks ago. But the Wolfpack's six-game winning streak includes victories over Duke, North Carolina and on Thursday, Texas Tech. That has to count for something. Either way, we tried our best to offer a fair assessment of the remaining teams. We're certain everybody will be reasonable in their reactions.

HBCU Basketball History And Victories In The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament​

A look at the history of HBCU basketball programs in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

By conference, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has eight wins, while the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference boasts seven wins. The Grambling State Tigers defeated the Montana State Bobcats, 88-81, in the First Four round of the 2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The 2018 match between No. 16 Texas Southern and No. 16 North Carolina Central was the only time HBCU basketball teams met in an NCAA tourney. Also, it was a classic contest between the SWAC and MEAC.

March Madness 2024: Reseeding the men's tournament Sweet 16​


For some, it was a challenge. Creighton had to fight Oregon in double overtime. Houston gave up a double-digit lead late before it finally defeated Texas A&M with an extra five minutes of play. Marquette had to hit big shots in the final minutes to get past Colorado, and NC State had to stop Oakland in overtime. For others, it was a breeze. UConn, Duke, Arizona, Illinois and Purdue simply cruised. There are new heroes to follow in the second weekend, such as NC State's J Barnes JR. and Clemson's Chase Hunter. But many of the teams and players are familiar in the Sweet 16. For the most part, the higher seeds prevailed. Now, we'll see who is built for the Final Four.

#11 Seed NC State

Bruising big men DJ Burnes Jr. scored a season-high 29 points, DJ Horne scored 20 and 11th-seeded North Carolina State. These Wolfpack (26-14) head to Glendale, Arizona, next weekend with a nine-game winning streak. After losing their last four regular-season games, and seven of nine. N.C. State and Purdue are meeting in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

#4 Seed Duke

Fourth-seeded Duke (27-9), which ousted top seed Houston in the Sweet 16 two nights earlier, missed out on its second Final Four in three seasons. McCain led Duke with 32 points, the freshman guard hitting 8 of 20 shots and making all 11 of his free throws. Jeremy Roach had 13 points while 7-foot center Filipowski had 11 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 4:52 left.

March Madness 2024: Reseeding the men's tournament Final Four​


Next week, four teams with four unique stories will go to Glendale, Arizona, with the national title on the line.

For UConn, it's a chance to become the first team since Florida State in 2006 and 2007 to win back-to-back championships. But it's more than that. If UConn's dominance continues, it will make the case that it is one of the greatest teams we've seen in recent men's college basketball history.

Purdue flushed the memory of last year's upset loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the NCAA tournament to earn the school's third trip to the Final Four, coach Matt Painter's first.

Alabama is also in the national semifinals. In men's basketball. It's the first time in school history.

NC State's magical run is even more stunning when you consider it is happening 41 years after Jim Valvano beat the odds and led the Wolfpack to the 1983 national title.
