Da Vinci’s Demons

I just read that it has already been renewed for a 2nd season. WTF?

The premier was okay. The first 30 minutes or so were kinda all over the place, then it started getting better.

lol, really? I guess it's because it cost so much to make from the outset they want to get their money's worth.

I'm a couple of minutes from the end of the first episode... the fact that I'm writing this while it's on in the background says it all, really.

It looks like it's trying to be the new Spartacus, but it's way too dumb. I kind of guessed that all the Italians would be British, but da Vinci isn't at all how I imagine him to be and his inventions are preposterous! Why bother making it about him if you're going to turn him into a straight, British guy with designer stubble and the ability to design mechanical birds that can fly better than the best 21st century robots?

Having said that, I can see potential for it to get better as it goes along, so long as they don't have too much of the double crossing and maneuvering. The twist at the end was so obvious that I'm not sure if it was meant to be a twist.

Oh, and less old naked men, please. Recognising Hugh Bonneville from his naked backside wasn't a skill I needed to discover I possessed.

The only big plus point for me was the visuals, which were outstanding. They must've spent a hell of a lot of time and money on those models of Florence.

Yeah, it's really pretty to look at. The show does get a little better, and sometimes it has scenes that are really good in a fun way, but then it's still really silly most of the time too.

Watching episode 2. I like the bits where they show him figuring out inventions and plans in his head. Some of the dialogue is terrible (Dan Brown terrible!), but hopefully that'll improve.

"Even a mouse occasionally bears its teeth just before it is crushed..."

Uh. Ok. I guess you have lots of experience looking at mouse faces while crushing them?

Ooooh, Irene Adler from Sherlock's in this one!

Watching episode 3, where da Vinci discovers continental drift and make a UV light from fireflies.

I am getting into it, though. And it's only just occurred to me that his assistant is really well cast, as he looks just like the mysterious figure in The Last Supper who some say was da Vinci's boyfriend (or Jesus's wife, Dan Brown).

The bad guy who works for the Vatican annoys me, though. He's so cartoonish, you can't take him seriously.

Isn't he the Pope's bastard son? Or maybe he's his nephew. I thought he was terrible at first, but he's kind of growing on me now. He clearly lusts for Leonardo.

You know, now that the show's started to revel in it's own absurdity a bit, I think I'm starting to like it more. Especially with the introduction of stuff like (spoilered for Fuddlemiff if he's still catching up)
time travel, Dracula and DRAGONS?!!??!

OH YEAH, BEAR! I forgot Bear is the composer for this show. YOU KNOW WHO NEEDS HIS OWN SHOW? BEAR! IMMMMMO
