Do you ever think you're just a Non Playable Character in the RPG that is life?

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
You have enough programming to be able to anser the questions the main character asks but not actually think independantly or do anything on your own?

My nonplayable character just spams all the time.

There was a small article about that very concept in my latest Games magazine.

Another quote from the Games magazine article:

Hoping to answer that question in the near future is Vincent Hughes, a physics professor at the University of Texas at Fort Worth. He believes tha NPCs may be generated with slightly different parameters from the rest of us --for example, they may lack free will-- and so have differences that in theory will show up on a quantum level. He is in the process of testing a large sample of student volunteers with MRIs, PET scans, and other types of imaging devices, hoping to detect subtle patterns within the population. Preliminary findings are expected later this year.

I see myself as tne black mage from the Final fantasy series.

No! I am a very playable character! I refuse to be stuck in this role! You can't make me do these things! Let me out of here!

Save against spells!

that fucker's got the cool hat. mine is 8th level right now, but i can't afford any fourth level spells (4000g? WTF is up with that?). so ICE2 will have to wait until later. at least the black belt is doing enough damage now, those assholes are nothing but dead weight until 7th level.

and when you think about it, we're all the NPCs of other people's RPGs, and they are all NPCs of ours.

Which one was the one with the green-haired girl and the monkeys and stuff?

FFII in the states, FFIV in asia. that's the one where you and you're buddy kain torch the little girl's village and she summons a titan on your ass.

Wait...there's a professor who's scanning his stundents' brains to see if they're NPCs?

That's awesome. If it turns out they are, will he kill them without suffering any guilt?

Or will he simply push them up against a wall and dry-hump them?

I got II, III, Crono Trigger and Earthbound for the SNES. :D

He could fire magic missile at the darkness.

Or will he simply push them up against a wall and dry-hump them?

But would they even know they were being dry humped?

I usually feel the opposite. I'm the only playable character BUT it's a really linear game so I might as well be nonplayable.

I used to get that, before I diminished.

I meet a number of people who I swear are NPCs.
I mean, they only have a limited number of responses and you can usually predict them with a high degree of accuracy

Anyone who converses through cliches and jargon fits here.

The question is, what game? I mean, if it's DND or Traveler or even GURPS that might not be so bad. But if it's Paranoia or *shudder* Call of Cthulhu...
