Bryce Young got offensive help he needed via Panthers' draft

Word from the camp of Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young during the third day of the 2024 NFL draft was "loving it.'' He should be. While new coach Dave Canales insisted this draft wasn't about surrounding the top pick of the 2023 draft with great players but, rather, building a great team for Young to "do his one-eleventh,'' Carolina's draft felt looked it was all about Young. The whole offseason has felt that way. It began with new general manager Dan Morgan spending $150 million on upgrading the middle of the offensive line with guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. Thirty-five of Young's team-record 62 sacks last season came from the guard and center positions.

It continued with a trade for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who, over the past two seasons, had an NFL-best 94 open score, an ESPN analytic that defines the likelihood a receiver would complete a catch if targeted. No Carolina receiver ranked in the top 40 during that span. Carolina also made upgrades on defense with third-round pick Trevin Wallace at inside linebacker. Bottom line: The roster around Young is more complete than it was this time last year after Carolina sent two first-round picks and former first-round receiver DJ Moore to the Chicago Bears to move up from No. 9 to select the quarterback No. 1 overall.

Panthers agree to deal with veteran RB Rashaad Penny

The Carolina Panthers' backfield is getting crowded. The team agreed to a contract with former first-round pick Rashaad Penny, reuniting him with head coach Dave Canales from their days with the Seattle Seahawks. Terms were not disclosed. Penny joins 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks, Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear in Carolina's backfield.

Penny is very familiar with Canales' system, which features the run and versatility. He had his best season with the Seahawks in 2021 when Canales was the passing game coordinator and new Carolina offensive coordinator Brad Idzik was an offensive assistant. He rushed 119 times for 749 yards and six touchdowns.

Penny, 28, played last season for the Philadelphia Eagles, but he appeared in just three games and rushed 11 times for 33 yards. Selected by the Seahawks in the first round (27th overall) of the 2018 draft, he has rushed for 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns in six seasons.

what are the panthers' plans for rookie rb jonathan brooks?
Carolina traded up six spots to select Texas running back Jonathan Brooks No. 46 overall less than a month after new coach Dave Canales talked about how "fired up'' he was with the backfield combination of Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders. The Panthers had seven total rushing touchdowns in 2023, tied with the New York jets and Minnesota Vikings for fewest in the NFL.

**********
Some draft analysts called it a "reach'' because Brooks is coming off surgery to repair a torn right ACL and for what Carolina gave up to get him -- 1,930 points (picks No. 52, No. 142, No. 155) for 1,060 points (pick No. 46) on the Fitzgerald-Spielberger NFL draft trade value chart.

Carolina Panthers schedule 2024: Takeaways, predictions

The Carolina Panthers' 2024 schedule was released along with the rest of the NFL slate Wednesday. The league didn't do first-year head coach Dave Canales any favors. He will begin the process of rebuilding the league's worst team last season by playing two of his first three games and three of his first five on the road against the New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears. That also means the process of rebuilding quarterback Bryce Young, coming off a dreadful rookie season after being the top pick of the 2023 draft, begins in front of loud, hostile crowds. But if Canales and Young can survive those games, they can take solace in having the third-easiest schedule in the NFL based on last year's results.

Strength of schedule

The Panthers are tied for the third-easiest schedule in the league (opponents had a .467 winning percentage in 2023).

Bold prediction

The Panthers will win eight games. It doesn't get much bolder than this since they've averaged 5.1 wins the past six seasons and haven't won more than seven games in a season since 2017, when they went 11-5. But with the league's third-easiest schedule, a weak NFC South and a much-improved roster, the potential is there. Remember, they won seven games in 2002 coming off an NFL-worst 1-15 record.
