It’s ashamed that it wasn’t educated enough before about racism, and it is here to take a cue from black people ,your book recommendations, your understanding, your absolution. And it’s also here a little bit for the righteous feeling of proximity to you, to your virtuous victimhood, to your moment in history.

Let this moment help white people dispense with our constant need to be right. To not hit the comment button. To stop interrupting. To be quiet for a minute. Let us listen. When black people say they feel scared, attacked, watched, different, suspicious, lesser, criminal, let us resist the urge to defend ourselves as a response. Let us admit that our skin does not make things harder for us the way it does for others. Let us understand the spectrum between racist and not, that some of our behaviors, thoughts and feelings are so deeply ingrained that we need real time and effort to root them out. Two confederate monuments in downtown were quietly removed Wednesday night. The George Davis monument at Market and 3rd streets and the Confederate Memorial at 3rd and Dock streets have been removed. The bases to the monuments are still in place at this time. A city official says this was done in order to protect the public safety and to preserve important historical artifacts. WWAY shot video of the scene earlier Thursday morning at about 2:45. When our crew arrived on scene, the monuments were already removed. “While members of the community have expressed a desire to see these monuments moved for many years, recent protests and controversy over these monuments has grown to a point that the monuments, in their original locations, were a threat to public safety.” A curfew on pedestrian activity in the vicinity of these two monuments has been in place since Saturday, June 20. The monuments have been moved temporarily to an undisclosed location. NC Law requires state approval for any monument of remembrance to be permanently moved, but allows an exception for temporary removal in the interest of public safety.

That's the only two Confederate Memorial in our city. Now we are going to start renaming all things slavery and white people who owned slaves.
