US envoy: Russia intends to dissolve Ukraine from world map

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Friday there should no longer be any doubt that Russia intends to dismantle Ukraine “and dissolve it from the world map entirely.” Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the U.N. Security Council that the United States is seeing growing signs that Russia is laying the groundwork to attempt to annex all of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk and the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, including by installing “illegitimate proxy officials in Russian-held areas, with the goal of holding sham referenda or decree to join Russia.” Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov “has even stated that this is Russia’s war aim,” she said.

Ukraine war hangs over UN meeting on nukes treaty's legacy

There was already plenty of trouble to talk about when a major U.N. meeting on the landmark Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty was originally supposed to happen in 2020. Now the pandemic-postponed conference finally starts Monday as Russia's war in Ukraine has reanimated fears of nuclear confrontation and cranked up the urgency of trying to reinforce the 50-year-old treaty. “It is a very, very difficult moment," said Beatrice Fihn, the executive director of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Russia's invasion, accompanied by ominous references to its nuclear arsenal, “is so significant for the treaty and really going to put a lot of pressure on this,” she said. “How governments react to the situation is going to shape future nuclear policy. ”The four-week meeting aims to generate a consensus on next steps, but expectations are low for a substantial, if any agreement.

Blinken says Russia is using Ukraine nuclear plant as "equivalent of a human shield"

Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke at the United Nations Monday about what he called "a critical moment" in efforts to keep the world safe from nuclear threats. At the opening of the 10th annual Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) conference at the U.N., Blinken pointed to North Korea's "unlawful nuclear program" and "ongoing provocations," Iran's "path of nuclear escalation," and Russia's aggression in Ukraine, which has included seizing control of Europe's largest nuclear power plant. "There are credible reports, including in the media today, that Russia is using this plant as the equivalent of a human shield, but a nuclear shield in the sense that it's firing on Ukrainians from around the plant and of course, the Ukrainians cannot and will not fire back lest there be a terrible accident involving a nuclear plant," Blinken added, saying that it "is the height of irresponsibility."

Ukraine war: Russia accuses US of direct role in Ukraine war

A spokesperson for Moscow's defence ministry alleged the US was approving targets for American-made Himars artillery used by Kyiv's forces.
Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov said intercepted calls between Ukrainian officials revealed the link. The BBC could not independently verify this. There was no immediate comment on the allegation from US officials. Russia previously accused Washington of fighting a "proxy war" in Ukraine. "It is the Biden administration that is directly responsible for all rocket attacks approved by Kyiv on residential areas and civilian infrastructure facilities in settlements of Donbass and other regions that caused mass deaths of civilians," Mr Konashenkov said. Himars is a multiple rocket system which can launch precision-guided missiles at targets as far as 70km (45 miles) away - far further than the artillery that Ukraine previously had.
They are also believed to be more accurate than their Russian equivalents.

The EU and UK seem to be slowly relaxing some of the sanctions they put in place against Russia as they have caused more damage to the west than to Russia. I do wish they jad taken time to think this stuff through before rushing to act then later back tracking. That is not good for creditablity. Taking the time to get things right should have been job one but I stead photos and news headlines seemed to be what they were after instead of good and sustainable policies which were well thought out.

Ukraine Violates War Laws, Endangers Civilians: Amnesty International

The humanitarian organization said in a release on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military's tactics "violate international humanitarian law and endanger civilians" by operating weapons out of bases established in residential areas while civilians are present. Russia has previously been accused by Amnesty International of violating multiple international laws during the war. The organization on Wednesday said that Ukraine's alleged violations "in no way justify Russia's indiscriminate attacks." "We have documented a pattern of Ukrainian forces putting civilians at risk and violating the laws of war when they operate in populated areas," Amnesty International humanitarian law." While conducting an investigation of Russian attacks in the Kharkiv, Donbas and Mykolaiv regions of Ukraine between April and July, Amnesty International researchers said they discovered that the Ukrainian military was operating out of civilian buildings in at least 19 towns and villages. The discovery was corroborated by satellite images, according to the release.

Kremlin prepares new manual for covering war against Ukraine: Russia saves everyone

Russian media report that under the Kremlin's new guidelines, pro-government media will talk about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s "prophecies" and compare the war against Ukraine in 2022 with the first World War in 1914.
The Kremlin continues to prepare manuals for Kremlin-aligned media on how they should cover the war in Ukraine. There have been previous media reports about the manuals prepared by the Russian Presidential Administration in July. They "recommended" drawing parallels between the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the baptism of Rus [the Christianisation of Kievan Rus, the historical predecessor of modern-day Ukraine, in the ninth century - ed.] and the Battle of the Neva [fought against the Swedes during their invasion of Russia in the eighteenth century - ed.]. In the new guidelines, the Kremlin sugg.
