Carey's average score of 14.516 for her two vaults just edged teammate and fellow Olympian Jordan Chiles. Chiles' 14.350 average was good enough for silver, ahead of Coline Devillard of France at 14.166.
Brody Molone wins first high bar gold for U.S. since 1979
The 22-year-old Malone, a two-time U.S. champion, led off the eight-man final and posted a score of 14.800. Hashimoto's bid to earn a third gold to go with the team and all-around titles he captured earlier in the meet fell just short when he scored 14.700. Arthur Mariano of Brazil took the bronze with a 14.466.

Brazil tops USA Basketball in World Cup qualifying
USA Basketball still has some work to do before clinching a berth in next year's World Cup. Bruno Caboclo scored 24 points, Georghino De Paula added 18 and Brazil greatly improved its chances of making the 32-team World Cup field by beating the U.S. 94-79 in a qualifying game on Friday. The U.S. would have wrapped up a World Cup spot with a win. The Americans play their next qualifying game Monday in Washington against Colombia and now might not clinch a World Cup berth until the final qualifying window in February.

The NHL and NHLPA had been meeting for the past year and looking at ways they could take a break in the NHL schedule and host the World Cup of Hockey in February 2024, with sources saying they planned to hold games in Europe and North America.
