Which renders this whole bullshit premise as an excuse for the cool sword fights.

That reminds of 300. It was about Spartans defending Sparta from the Persians. No pseudo-intellectual crap required.

So, back to Highlander, I remember this kickass line said by one of the many villains :

"Duncan McCleod must die !"

Well you miss out the part where because its on tv, the whole premis of the show is about cutting peoples heads off, and thats the one thing they could never actually show, plus how they guy playing Duncun always seemed to be faking an orgasm when the quickening happened, makes the show homoerotic soft porn, all tease and no money shot

I totally forgot about the decapitation. See, like X-files, I watched the series a very long time ago, back when TV's over here used to air US series extensively.
