By the broad definition of the urban dictionary a showmance is any relationship where one or both parties are in it for 'show' - e.g. to gain social status, to hide being gay, to make someone else jealous, to gain citizenship, etc.

I would suspect by that definition most of use have been in a 'showmance'. When I was a teen I dated a girl I didn't really have feelings for because she liked me, and I had very low self-esteem at the time and just wanted to 'show' everyone that *somebody* liked me. It was a horrible thing to do, but such is the confused mind of a 16 year old boy.
