Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner criticized the WNBA on Friday for failing to spotlight rookie stars Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. A matchup between Reese and Cardoso's Chicago Sky and the Minnesota Lynx helped kick off the WNBA's preseason action Friday, but the game featured neither on local television broadcasts nor on the WNBA's League Pass.

"It's wild they didn't have this game on League Pass!" Griner captioned an Instagram story. "But they did what they wanted! In no world does it make sense not to have these [two] young ladies' game on the app!" With a towering 6'9 figure, Griner starred in the WNBA almost immediately upon entering the league in 2013, earning an All-Star selection as a rookie, scooping up Defensive Player of the Year honors in the following two seasons and averaging better than 20 points a night between 2017-2019.

After returning from a harrowing nine-month detention by Russian authorities, Griner has more actively used her platform to speak out on behalf of other detainees, LGBTQ+ rights and the growth of women's basketball.

"There's a lot of buzz,” Griner said about the state of women's basketball in April. “We definitely have to use that momentum. It's like there's been a lot of great talent, but some of the stuff Caitlin [Clark] is doing is on a whole another level. There's always been excitement and great players, but I just think the coverage wasn't there like it is now and that's great to see to tell more of the stories.”

Few players encapsulate that buzz quite like Reese, the most clouted college basketball player in America, and Cardoso, the anchor to one of the most dominant squads in NCAA history. The WNBA initially advertised that fans would be able to watch all preseason games through the League Pass service, a streaming platform akin to the NBA's League Pass marketed as offering all WNBA games, but revealed in a statement that only Clark's Indiana Fever's matchup against the Dallas Wings would be available.

“Apologies!" the WNBA's statement on Instagram began. "Our App is incorrectly showing that every preseason game (including CHI vs MIN) is available on League Pass. But you *can* watch IND vs DAL tonight at 8 p.m. ET in a FREE preview of WNBA League Pass on the WNBA App. Also streaming free on the app will be the Canada Game.”
