The Sandman - Netflix

The Sandman Season 2 cast continues to grow, with Netflix announcing that eight new actors have joined the upcoming series, including Game of Thrones’ Jack Gleeson and comedian Steve Coogan.

In a recent announcement, Netflix revealed a slew of new casting choices, with Gleeson joining the series as Puck, a “malevolent hobgoblin” that acts as the royal jester to King Auberon of Faerie. Other announced actors, and their respective roles, include Ruairi O’Connor (The Spanish Princess) joining the series as Orpheus, the poet and oracle, Freddie Fox (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) playing Loki, the god of chaos.

Clive Russell (Game of Thrones) will Odin, the father of Thor. Laurence O’Fuarain (The Witcher: Blood Origin) was cast as Thor, the storm god, while Ann Skelly (The Nevers) and Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending) will both play Cluracan, royal emissaries from the court of Faerie. Indya Moore plays Wanda, a professional driver and security agent, and Steve Coogan plays Barnabas, a canine companion for the Endless’s brother.

The cast joins the previously announced returning cast members of Tom Sturridge, Kirby, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Ferdinand Kingsley, Stephen Fry, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Vanesu Samunyai, and Razane Jammal.

What to expect from The Sandman Season 2?

“A journey is beginning that will take us from Destiny’s garden to Hell, from the Heart of the Dreaming to Ancient Greece and revolutionary France, and from there to places even I cannot quite imagine on the screen. I will be patient. Good things are coming,” creator Neil Gaiman teased in his previous letter celebrating the 35th anniversary of his The Sandman comics.

I was just talking yesterday with a friend how It would be good to see Jack Gleeson back in something (that I watch), so I got my wish there. I can see the Puck energy in Gleeson and Steve Coogan as Barnabas is certainly a casting choice!

Joffrey as Puck is an inspired choice.

So they've changed the order of the stories around? Having Wanda appear in Brief Lives then doing A Game of You in season 3 (if we get it?)

Freddie Fox is showing up in a ton of stuff.

The temptation is to say "oh they've OBVIOUSLY cancelled it because of Gaiman being an abuser" BUT theere were set pics last year showing scenes from The Kindly Ones being filmed so it's possible this was the plan all along. And Netflix do love to cancel things after two seasons.

“‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” “The Sandman” showrunner Allan Heinberg said in a statement to Variety Friday. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

On the other hand, I don't entirely buy this! If they were ONLY filming the stories centric to Dream, why did they film 'Dream Of A Thousand Cats'?

They've confirmed that's it, right? So we won't get the completed story. I can't say I blame them, but I do feel genuinely bad for everyone who has worked on the series. It must have been a real gut punch to all of them when the allegations came out, and they realised that by no fault of their own they are working on what is essentially a tainted production (maybe that sounds a bit melodramatic but Gaiman is so famous in his own right that separating his work from the man is tough and of course he was heavily involved with the making of this series as well.)

As someone who has loved the Sandman comics for decades, I enjoyed the first season. It was far from perfect (Despair, etc) but it also did nail quite a lot of it (Hob, Corinthian, Desire were standouts) and I've been looking forward to this season ever since. Of course, I'm still going to watch it, but it will have all this bullshit looming over it now and that sucks.

I like the line from "Jaynestown" in "Firefly" (paraphrased): "In my opinion, anyone they ever made a statue of was likely one form of bastard or another." If someone... Huh. Just had a thought. I'll come back to it... If someone did something amazing and turned out to be a bastard, that doesn't take away from the amazing thing they did. I don't particularly like Danny Glover, but he's great in "Lethal Weapon." Kevin Spacey is one of the better Lex Luthors in live action Superman.

But this makes me think about Roman Polanski. And I guess I still stand by my initial statement. Because "Chinatown" is amazing. "Rosemary's Baby" is very good. The fact that the director turned out to be a shitbag doesn't take away from either of those films being great.

The fact that David had to flick through the old brain Rolodex to figure out who was being refereed to (the guy asking wasn't exactly articulate, tbf) is quite telling. Not sure about the commentary on the round of applause, either. It was an awkward question to answer, and he deflected it without saying anything. Which is fair enough. It's really not fair that just because you worked with the guy you have to now field questions on the heinous shit he has done, like it's his responsibility. That said, It's not exactly “stunning and brave”, either.

I don't know what I'm even talking about.

A few people are already complaining because it's not “comic accurate”. Like anybody really cares about Puck being comic accurate. It will be good to see Gleeson back in something. I am just pissed that my enthusiasm for this show has been greatly diminished since the allegations hit. The whole thing just feels off now. I'll still watch it.

Doesn't Puck hang around in the present day for a long time when he kidnaps Daniel? Makes sense he'd dress like a normal person.

He... I think at one point he and Loki both appear as plainclothes police detectives. Loki probably does the illusion to make Puck look like a human cop.

I've nearly finished the fourth episode of season 2, so here's some thoughts of the first 3 which cover the "Season of Mists" arc. Mainly looking at it as a comic reader because that's what I AM.

In some ways, it ended up better than I expected. They include some stuff that I thought they'd leave out to save time and money: like Dream visiting Hobb in his dream before going to Hell. I got shivers when Hobb gave his toast, but maybe that was just from remembering the comic? They included most of the characters who come to the Dreaming to vie for the keys to Heaven, and some like Odin and Loki are played by very good actors who really help elevate the scenes. They put in Cain and Abel's horrific magic show, so points for that! They even included Shivering Jemmy, who I thought for sure would be left out, and the little girl playing her was appropriately creepy. Nuala's actress was really good and I think it's a smart move having her befriend Dream a bit earlier than in the comic (it was funny though when she takes off her glamour and changes from a beautiful woman to...a beautiful woman with an Irish accent.) Overall, I think they did the story justice...

But there's still some omissions. No Bast? Okay, fine, you don't need everyone. But why take out the prologue showing Loki being tortured? That's pretty impotant to show what he's escaping from! And changing Lucifer's classic scene on the beach where she congratulates God on the sunset to Lucifer just sitting moodily under the White Cliffs of Dover? I don't get it!

Why would Dream let Azazel eat Chorozon? He should be under Dream's protection. Pretty sure what wasn't in the book.

Destiny was a bit disappointing, should have been an older actor with more gravitaz. Delirium was good in this arc, but I felt they toned her down a bit to avoid having to use too many special effects around her (having watched most of the fourth episode I can confirm that Esme Creed-Miles is very good at playing the character.) Despair is a total joke still: doesn't act like Despair at all, doesn't have any of her good moments from the comic. Might as well have left her out.

MORE THOUGHTS LATER.
