me & a friend are gonna buy some dryice this weekend because we read about a few fun things you can do with it, does anyone know what this shit it? or if it will keep in a normal freezer?

I don't recall the temperature of dry ice, but there's NO way it will keep in a freezer unless it hits some serious negative numbers.
BTW Where in the fuck does one lay hands on dry ice to begin with?
HF thinks there can be some serious hell raised with the stuff

Dry ice is simply frozen CO2 - carbon dioxide....however, dry ice needs temperatures of around -34-36oC to remain frozen...this means the substance will just evapourate off in time in an ordinary freezer....unless you are going to use it straight away - it wil just be a waste of money.

Not only that it's very expensive. I get some on the same day as my annual Halloween party to float in the punch because of the 'smoke' effect. A piece the sice of a paper back book is about 3 dollars and lasts a day in a normal freezer. I get mine at a local warehouse for ice and they get a lot of requests this time of year.

May I suggest keeping it in Lisa's ass. The temp should be cold enough there.
On another note - thats not something you want to touch with your skin (i would think) so don't fuck around.

Actually, it's okay to touch....the dry ice melts and evapourates rather than your hand freezing....as long as you don't hold it for too long you should be okay....but it is best to wear gloves.

LOL!

One of the few benefits of having a long winter was watching the dumb kids at recess lick the metallic playground equipment and have their tongues stick to it!
Damn...good memories...

Dry ice bricks (which is what I presume they'll sell you) keep fairly well in a styrofoam cooler. Usually they're delivered that way, and kept inside one... or use a lunch cooler thing, like a Lunchmate... those work well.
It sublimates (solid->gas) at -78.5 Celsius though, colder than someone mentioned. But its thermal conductivity is trivial compared to water, so it takes longer for it to evanesce than one might think. Keep it sealed and covered so no air convects around it, and it keeps nicely.
Having it in the freezer isn't all that useful, however if you put the styrofoam cooler carrying it inside a freezer, that often helps. Some freezers can be adjusted so that they're down around -20 Celsius. That helps reduce losses due to thermal radiation, and the closed freezer door helps reduce convection losses.
Dry ice can often also be obtained from a local pharmacist in small quantities. The drugs shipped in that require cooling usually are packed in dry ice. And then so are lobsters from Maine, and many other things.
Dry ice isn't really dangerous. It's just carbon dioxide.... trees love it, and we breathe it out. It's naturally occuring.
Frostbite can occur from holding it at length... it does evaporate quickly yes, but it's taking the heat out of your tissue's cells to do it. I usually use a pair of tongs, and all's well.
But for more freezing fun... I prefer liquid nitrogen which is less expensive than gasoline. Plus it's at 77 Kelvin, about -195 Celsius... and sufficient to freeze flowers and bananas.
And, it's easy to make liquid oxygen from it, which is useful if you have Estes rockets converted to hold a LOX chamber.... or just for doing interesting experiments with hydrogen.
BTW, don't forget to report back on your experiments!

My bad....I was using my faulty memory....I should have checked first.

I have to agree here....liquid N2 is more fun...but I though it was hard to get hold of outside a lab....

The density of dry ice is something frothy on the order of 1.56 of water. In other words, that's about 1560 g/L. When sublimated, like most any gas, its density is 1 g/L. So, yes, that expansion is pretty large. However, CO2 under pressure doesn't sublimate very well. At 2 atm, it turns into liquid form... But as I mentioned, it sublimates very slowly. And any seal on a bottle commonly available won't be able to hold in any sort of pressure that might develop.
If you're thinking mm that he might create some sort of "bomb" out of carbon dioxide, then immediately run to all convenience stores and grocery stores... call out the National Guard on the Coca Cola bottling plant, for every "carbonated" beverage contains carbon dioxide dissolved in it.
I'd worry more about LN2. Liquid nitrogen is easily obtained from the same welder's gas supply that Timmy's already found as a source of dry ice. However, welder's gas suppliers remain liable for selling their products to common people. So, I'm sure no one is going to give him a few liters (or litres) of liquid nitrogen.
Dry ice is very ineffective at making things go boom. If it were, the military would use it. But then again, LN2 isn't all that grand either. I use it every week or so, and we need no special permits or anything to have it. It's just air, after all... or at least 80% of air.

As someone whos been a pharmacy tech and who managed a drug store before turning techie I can truely saw I've NEVER seen that.

MM - I wouldn't worry...Sturmde is right, the only damage that he can do is maybe a bit of frostbite on his hands if he holds it too long....I would be more worried it he said he was going to a Uni library and reading textbooks and journals for ideas on how to use other common household substances.....
I should also add if Aries just wants to use the dry ice for cooling something then it might be better if he justed added lots of salt to icy water and then immerse it....saves a lot of time and trouble.

howed you guess we were gonna make a bomb?! i might as well tell you were doing it...first take a few spoonfulls of dry ice & put it in a coke bottle, then add water, screw on the lid tight & in about 10-20 min...[b][b]

Hows that work? Gas from the melting ice causes the pressure to build till it pops? Wouldn't it take more than just a spoonful?

Put it, with some water, into a glass bottle filled with nails. Screw a cap on REEL tight and run like a mutha fucka.

*sigh* - it will not burn your hand off...the worst that will happen is a bit of frostbite. Even liquid nitrogen will not burn your hand off if you happen to spill a few drops on yourself... :D
